Having lived in the city for decades, I truly was intrigued by this article. I want to add that I became aware of what a legitimately serious issue toilets were while enjoying Bill Bryson's At Home: A Short History of Private Life (which I recommend, his audio books are also excellent); hearing easy to understand explanations of the horror of old ( Read more... )

I saw the cover story while walking to work yesterday but I never would have thought to read it online if not for seeing it here. Thanks! I was here for the big JC Decaux deal but have still never been inside one of those. I kindof love the airpnp idea. Saw another app recently that allows people to rent out their parking spaces--driveways, etc--by the hour too. Great idea!

It really was a shame to see the JC Decaux ones fail, I was myself with a friend in the middle of an afternoon, when a small line of us had to harass two people to stop their shenanigans because you know...we actually needed to use the toilet! It was clear they were up to something else (and were quite rude to us, though we were eventually successful). lol

Although the airpnp is amusing to understand in origin, and seemingly clever, it could pose a crime or more "awkward" problems, but hey...it's San Francisco! That won't stop us. Ha, ha, ha. I'd imagine it chases away those who don't/can't carry mobile devices though (which could also point to some classism or technology elite); however, it is a remark on how hard people are trying to make money on the side.

I was encouraged by the pPod ideas, as I was aware that Europe handles these things well and has done so for a while, then again....we're not Europe as JC Decaux taught us. It will be interesting to see. Here's to hoping it's just watering the
