Yay! You got it up there safely! Well done, and it amazes me this is your first stab at writing one of these. I love its simplicity... a simplicity that hides a lot of angst and grief... and the way you contrast the mechanical action of the digging with all these thoughts racing through Sam's mind. When I saw IKWYDLS I couldn't conceive of how Sam had gotten to the low he was at, but this story definitely provides the segue into that profound grief and desperation... ;-)

Zat: You were my inspiration for sure. A challenge to write without sap (no matter how much I wanted to :) I was also obsessing about blood. Sam always thinking he was a freak. And Dean being pure. The idea that he'd wished he had Dean's blood -- and the slight foreshadowing of taking blood into oneself. Of course, he choose very impure blood in the end. But for Sam I always thought it was his need to control, to have power and not be afraid. It's why he left Dean and went to Stamford. Leaving his father wasn't hard I'd imagined, leaving Dean had be something else.

Anyway, you planted the bug in me but good. Got a Mystery Spot nugget floating around my brain now.

I've been wanting and waiting to read a fic about Sam and Bobby burying Dean. Good job. The grief and hatred that Sam was feeling about himself having to bury Dean after he'd promised he would save him was excellently captured. It brought tears to my eyes. Thanks.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I'm so glad you liked this. This was my first ever fanfic. I've read a bunch and I write stories and such for myself but never with known characters. This fandom is just too compelling. I've never known characters that seep into you like these two do. Lately Sam just keeps talking to me asking me to tell more of his story!

Thanks so much for commenting. I'm so new to this that every comment is like gold. Funny you mentioned crying. I almost never cry with TV shows -- except for Supernatural. It's just such a divinely portrayed relationship it slays me every time. For this piece I wanted very much to touch on what had to be Sam's most agonizing moment -- which the Show just didn't get to show in my opinion. To me, this (and Mystery Spot) explain Season 4. So since the Show ran out of time to show it I created it myself :) I do have a new story. It's almost ready to post.

I agree with you - watching Sam bury Dean would have been monumentally heartbreaking. I always cry at Supernatural....my poor boys. As a fan you connected with them brilliantly.

I too am new to this business - and I know how it feels when you get feedback so I always make sure I leave some - it takes me ages to muck about with the cut and everything - but it gets easier every time you post.

This was the first fanfiction I ever wrote so I really treasure every comment. I'm pleased you liked and even more pleased you thought it played out in a faithful manner to the Show. It was important to me to keep Sam as Sam even though he was in the worst place of his life. And I liked the idea of using blood -- especially as a tainted/pure contrast -- to underpin his extreme guilt at both not being able to save Dean as he'd promised and his feelings of being a "freak" and not worthy of being alive while his brother was in Hell in his place.
