Lee's hair was mussed and his eyes were a bit wild, sand streaked over one cheek where he'd wiped his hand over his face to clear away the sweat. He'd spent the hour after he'd finished talking to Gai training in hopes that it'd somehow clear his head, but there'd been something missing in the burn and stretch of muscle that had finally convinced him that he wasn't going to find what he was looking for on the training field. He needed to talk to Gaara.
He came to an uncertain halt halfway into the kitchen, staring at the knife and the neatly chopped pile of vegetables.
Right. Dinner. They'd been cooking when... right. Lee cleared his throat awkwardly, then trudged back across the room to close the door he'd left open behind him. "Is there anything that I can help with?"
Gaara hesitated, studying Lee's face. He didn't understand the wildness in those eyes. "You could make some rice. That is, if you still want dinner. I wasn't sure if you'd be hungry." To someone who didn't know him well, his voice would have sounded flat and neutral. But there was a faint note of uncertainty below the surface...and in the tension around his eyes. "I thought you might have had dinner with him." He paused again, looking at the smudge of sand on Lee's cheek. "Did something happen?"
"Rice. Right." Lee started to turn to the cabinets, but that tinge of uncertainty in Gaara's voice stopped him. He looked at Gaara, watching his expression. The hint of jealousy was obvious when Lee was looking for it, written as clearly in the faint narrowing of Gaara's eyes as the uncertainty was in his voice.
"Gai-sensei was in the clinic," Lee said. "I visited him there and we... talked." His cheeks flushed and he glanced down, not knowing if he wanted Gaara to ask about what they'd talked about or not. "And then I went to train some to clear my head."
"I see." He noticed the flush in Lee's cheeks, the way his long lashes quickly swept downward, hiding his eyes. His heartbeat quickened, though he wasn't sure why. "What did you talk about?"
