In talking with Shane, the Gulf War veteran, he believes quite the opposite. Saddam has the power, and he is just crazy enough, to start bombing countries around him. However, Shane is worried that we should not be getting Saddam out of power, that we should keep him in power as long as possible, as the alternatives to him are even worse.

I was in the service while the war was going on as well, though I wasn't "over there", I was privy to a lot of stuff that the average American, or even the average soldier, isn't privy to.
The first war was fought for all the wrong reasons. The fires set to the Kuwaiti oil fields were done as a statement, that is lost on most Americans.
All due respect to Shane, but I have to agree to disagree, and find his comments lacking in foresight. Although he is right, the alternatives are daunting as well.
On another note, you look familiar. Do I know you??

Lacking in foresight? Hmm, don't know about that one, we have had many, many discussions over it. He was the one laying mines and setting up nukes, "just in case", so I do think that he has a unique viewpoint on the subject.

In a nutshell, YES! Very well done, BTW. ::grins::
I vacillate wildly between the hippie chick (which I come by honestly, BTW - conceived in summer of '68 in San Fran!) and the devil's advocate poster child. Sure, I want to get the bad guys. But more importantly, I don't want there to be reasons for war, much less the strife and turmoil of war itself. IF we go after said bad guys - and it's not too hard to tell who they are - I want us to be smart about it. Let's not alienate anyone. We're powerful, but we're the punk kid on the block who just thinks he's the shiznit. With that power comes great responsibility. Proof?!? It's vital! Let's do what we have to do, but we deserve to know that it's for the right reasons - not just 'cuz they tell us so.
I don't know what the real answer is. I just know this prolly ain't it. I will support those who fight, for they obviously believe what they're committing to is right. But I wish there weren't so many lemmings who buy it because they're told to.

US - "You have WMDs!"
Iraq - "No, we don't."
US - "Yes you do!"
Iraq - "No, we don't!"
UN Inspectors - "We don't see them!"
Iraq - "Because there are none!"
US - "But you must have them! We have a secret memo that says so!"
US (to the press corps) - "And, no, you can't see the memo!"
Lots of our EU allies - "Yeah! We want to see the memo, too!"
US - "Uuuummm... We lost it. Don't change the subject!"
Lots of our EU allies - “Why don’t you give the UN Inspectors more time to finish the inspections?”
US (to Iraq) - "Unless you start showing us the WMDs that you'd better not have, we're going to war!"
US - (to the EU allies) - "Just ignore the TONS of warships going into the Gulf"...
UN Inspectors - “We still don’t see them!”
Doesn’t that about cover it?
