Ran into an old acquaintance today: Fear. Not just "Ahh! I didn't see that spider there!", but slowing-time-to-a-crawl-in-the-moment fear

So weird--I had the exact same fear about this launch as well! I wouldn't even turn it on!
And I totally understand the parental fear too. I can't pick up the phone when my parents call without having the immediate thought of "something's wrong!". It's just the odds at this point--they are both in their late 70s. At some point now, things go wrong. :(. Or the primal instinct fear--I've had to cover up my neuroses as best I can so that they don't become Ps issues as well. And I've had to apologize for seeming overreactions when he's stumbled across my buttons.
I think the key is that neither of us are letting these fears stop us from doing what we want to do. You didn't jump out of the pool and I don't avoid my mom's calls. Fear itself can be healthy. It's only when we let fear stop us from doing reasonable things that it becomes a problem.
Ahhh fear.... so much of what you said echoed in my head. I didn't see this shuttle launch because I was at work but I completely understand the moments of holding your breath and hoping for the best outcome. And I don't really have problems flying - as I far prefer it for driving but those moments of take-off and landing are also just always pauses. But that's a good way to put it - don't let it rule your life but it is a force in it to be acknowledged.
