There's this little fringe film out that no body's ever really heard of...

I had time to kill today, so I thought I'd wander over to my local plaza and check out some of the current Star Trek merch. Dodgy scans under the cut.

This is relevant because I talk about Pegg's incredibly mediocre face )

Why is it that action figures are either frightening, or bland? And if they do look good, they break if you look at them too hard.

Hey, my Editor (in)action figure is awesome-sauce. He's just still stuck in his box so I can lord his resale value over my Dr Who-obsessed peers.

The Next Gen figures were actually pretty good. I fail to understand why the XI ones suck so hard. That said, I'm assuming the comic book/collectors stores will eventually get a superior (and pricier) range in.

I still haven't gotten my hands on a frickin' Editor. I've even offered people "free" commissions if they send me one still in box.

Of course, the sorts of people who buy commissions from me aren't the same sort of people to fanthing over Doctor Who.

My Shaun figure looks really awesome. But I looked at him too hard and his stand broke.

You know, it is possible to just buy one. You could even (*gasp*) do a commission for money, and then swap the money for the figure. You just need to stop being lazy already.

Yeah, I've been holding off on getting any Star Trek figures (was hoping to get Scotty, McCoy, and Spock...and Sulu...and Chekov) because they just don't look up to par. Thing is, they're probably meant to be...well, toys for kids who don't care about accuracy or detail. But then even the Doctor Who toys are pretty damn awesome, as they're both collector's quality and fun to pose/play with. The Trek toys definitely need a new company.

I scored a heap of Next Gen toys when my brother moved out and, well, they're a lot better than the XI one's I've seen so far. The faces actually look like the actors, the males characters don't all have the same body, the uniforms aren't creepy and rubbery. So yeah. Hopefully the adult/collector's toysaction figures are more seductive.

I actually had an old person rant in the toystore at the transporter room set. Why do kids need a transporter room set? Don't they have imaginations these days? Back when I was a nipper, and playing TOS, I didn't have any of these new-fangled transporter room playsets. I didn't even have any TOS toys! I had to use G.I. Joes! *gah! old*

*Actually, it just occurred to me that you could put some little cuts in the rubber, and then your 15cm Kirk and Spock figures could grab one another by the shirt fronts. Where they go from there is up to you.

|D Oh, snap!

The Barbies are SOOO COOOL I just have no room in my room dammit...but omg the Spock's hair! glee!

I just like that you can comb their hair. Spock can spend all day, shining his bangs in the reflection of his Science station...

hmm. the phaser looks promising, but the action figures aren't the kind you display. they're for playtime only.

then again, action figures for kids aren't meant to be expensive, detailed replicas. and only kids would want action figures, right? ;)

Most of my displayed figures are the playtime only kind, and some of them are really awesome (I'm still kicking myself for not being a Superman Returns Lex Luthor figure - with kryptonite launching action!). I think that there's a happy medium somewhere between 'highly detailed and expensive' and 'zomg fugly, and still kind of expensive' that really isn't being exploited by the toy market that this point in time :(
