The task isn't simple: it isn't about swinging a sword or doing anything Komamura knows well. Or anything he's already mastered.

He takes Susumu out of the crib. His hands - his paws - seem too large and he's afraid he's holding the child too tightly. There's no smell of fear though and that calms Saijin a little bit. But he's not quite sure yet if he knows Susumu's scent.

The boy is wide awake and really, really hungry. Saijin looks at the kitchen where Kaname heats up a bottle of milk. Or something similar to milk - the shinigami realizes he doesn't know exactly what it is. His partner is much better at all these details.

At some point the parental instinct kicks in: Saijin supports the baby's head and knows when Susumu has drunk enough. Fed, the boy wrinkles his nose and pricks up the small, pointy ears. He seems to be interested in everything he sees. Saijin gently strokes the baby's cheek; he keeps worrying he will scare or hurt this tiny, fragile being.

But Susumu doesn't seem to be scared. He sneezes and wrinkles the nose again and tries to raise his head. Komamura guesses what his son wants to do and moves him closer so that Susumu can smell his father's own scent.

And he's right: the boy squints his eyes and starts sniffing. Saijin realizes that today he's wearing a freshly-cleaned coat and his son doesn't recognize its smell. But he knows the scent of his parent and after a short moment, accepts this new version.

Saijin sighs, content and - already - proud and nuzzles the small, furry ear.

Fluff is good for the soul :)
