Rise of Khan

Dec 02, 2009 19:36

There is almost a week of time that passes, where hardly a clue to Khan's whereabouts is to be found, but crime is on the rise, and that in itself is reminiscent of events that have played out in the past for the Old Tiger. It seems the shifty mastermind is keeping almost uncharacteristically low after his challenge and the failed attempt on The ( Read more... )

The week is a long and frustrating one, and the older Shadow is spread slightly thin working in both worlds. He finds plenty of work to keep Myra busy, however, putting her to task at some of the legwork he would ordinarily do himself. The drug market is just starting to pick up again, and those involved in such trade are acting with unusual caution. That makes them all the harder to keep tabs on, and spy work is a tricky business for his agents these days ( ... )

It's almost a half hour of tiring, hard work before the coffin appears, undamaged. The warriors carrying it though, look harried, but glad to be free of the confining doorways. The back of the truck is opened and the coffin loaded. It it carefully placed in a crate within the truck.

The doors to the museum are relocked and the warriors board the back of the truck. The naljorpa stays outside however, and closes the back. With a quick call, he boards the cab of the truck and the engine starts as a truck rumbles by. It's a shipment to some unknown location of little consequence. The matter is that the operation was likely timed to a consistent arrival. The sound of the starting truck has been effectively masked, as it begins to carefully and quietly use the slight slope of the back street to coast from the docks.

Once it's slow, lumbering form reaches the road, it shifts into gear, and lumbers along, soon joining some late night traffic.

It is slow, hard work for Khan's minions, but for The Shadow it's half an hour to watch, and think, and plan. By the time the truck trundles past his hiding place, he's more than ready. He's waited for the naljorpa to board, and from his spot at the end of the loading dock the truck passes him at a crawl. Quick as a flitting shadow and from the side opposite the one the naljorpa climbed in, he makes a quiet leap to the very back of the truck. He crouches there, securing his position before the truck ever picks up speed. It's not ideal, and he'll likely have to drop off before they enter any kind of secured area, but for now there's little for him to do but mark the route and enjoy the ride.

The ride is relatively smooth, likely due to the combination of precious, and living cargo hidden inside the truck. There doesn't seem to be any hurry to the pace of the drive, and it moves about various streets before finally reaching a garage. The street is dark, but the interior is well-lit. The truck comes to a gentle stop, while an attendant opens the gate. The garage butts up between two buildings, and the driver backs into a parking spot that quite literally puts the back of the truck to the wall. To all appearances, it would be impossible to move anything in or out ( ... )
