Cold darkness of midnight

Jun 03, 2011 17:48

Nigel was wandering the halls again. He didn't know what time it was other than very late or very early. He had given up on sleep, the nightmares coming too vividly and frequently now for him to find any refuge there. He had taken a handful of his caramels Devon had gotten him and went to the roof for a while to sit and think. He had sat in the ( Read more... )

Looking over at her clock, Devon saw '3:32' glowing brightly and she groaned. She was trying to get herself back on a regular human schedule, but she was nocturnal by nature and habit. Pushing back from the desk in her room, she stretched and looked around her room, smiling at the little knick-knacks she'd brought from home.

She'd even brought some of the older fae texts she'd collected that concerned vampires; figuring it would make a nice present to transcribe and offer them to Nikola. Knowing she wasn't going to be sleeping any time soon, she sighed and got up, figuring a cup of tea would be perfect right about now.

Pulling on a pullover sweater, she made her way in her pj's and barefeet down to the kitchen - not really that surprised to see Nigel up at this hour. "Hey, sweetie," she said, smiling. "Couldn't sleep?"

"Sure." He was distant and very, very civil. "If you don't want to chat about how you got cold, that's fine. Or we can talk in the morning. Or, you know, never. Fine by me, Nigel."

She cocked her head and looked over at Will. "Oookay, did I miss something?" Grabbing the whistling kettle, she poured the water over the bags and let them steep.

Nigel picked up Will's coolness, glanced at him and huddled even deeper into the depth of the sweater. "Alright," he said very quietly.

He shrugged, folding his arms, wishing he has wearing more than boxer shorts and a skimpy t-shirt. "Don't think so. Did you?"

Had he been too pushy? Should he have taken her out for dinner before jumping into bed? Yeah, here comes Z-Man, everyone goes to him for help with their relationships but he can't seem to keep one himself. Relationship. Definitely too strong a word...

She looked between Nigel and Will, confusion blazoned on her face. A flick of his eyes towards Nigel had it cleared up in a flash. Oh wow, I forgot about that with people, she thought, physically smacking herself in the forehead. "Woah, big miscommunication here," she held out both her hands and looked over at him.

"Body heat, Will. And comfort. And I may have forgotten to tell you that fae are naturally very... touchy-feely. Nigel's my bff, aren't you, sweetie?" she grinned over at Nigel sitting at the table as she took out his tea bag and brought him over his black tea.

Nigel shivered as he watched them and then nodded. "We're just friends," he said softly, suddenly getting an idea of what was going on.

He rubbed an aching spot on his shoulder. He pulled the collar of his shirt a bit to glance down and see the stitch was starting to untie itself.

"Oh. Oh, well, that's okay then, obviously..." he found himself chuckling with relief. Overreacting, Zimmerman. Chicks did not find that attractive.

A part of him did not like Devon curled up around Nigel like a duvet one bit, but it was still mighty relieving. In his shrinky opinion, the last thing Nigel needed was a one-night stand, cuddling included or not and, well, he thought she'd have more sense. He was glad to know that yes - she did.

Moving over to the sofa, he offered a spare rug rolled up behind it. "Ah, ouch," he managed to get out with real sympathy at the sight of the stitch. "I'll go get the first aid box..."

She bit back the smile and ducked her head. He'd been jealous. And that was kind of... awesome. Cuz it meant he thought of her as more than just a fling. Seeing the stitch, she winced and rifled her fingers through his hair. "Sweetie, you have to take better care of yourself than that."

Sneaking a quick glance over to see that Will wasn't watching, she went and grabbed a caramel from the stash she'd placed in the room. Sneaking it over, she grinned before going and making her own tea.

Nigel smiled a bit at the caramel, making it disappear into his mouth before answering. "They're starting to itch. I'm not sure when Helen wants them to come out, but I'd like them out," he stated.

"You'll pull your teeth out with that stuff, too," he said calmly. He totally saw the caramel. Coming back into the room with the first-aid kit, he asked Devon, "don't I get one?" with bear-cub eyes, kissing her cheek. Firmly.

He moved over and perched on the arm of the sofa, gently probing Nigel's shoulder. "So... found yourself a bff and you've been here, what, a week - hey, not bad, man."

She mock-scowled at him. "They're for Nigel, though I might be inclined to share my gummy bears.."

Turning back to Nigel, she asked, "How long have they been in? Because if it's longer than nine or ten days, they can probably come out." She peeked over Will's head to see the wounds.

"Helen put them in the day after I came," he said, glancing at Will. "So, getting on that now." He shifted to pull his shirt off. There were eight spots in total across his torso and back with two to three stitches in each. His back, abdomen a.d chest were a road map of surgical scars badly stitched together.

"Lovely," he winced. "I can give you a shot for pain if you'd like but I think Magnus would do better taking them out. Hang in there," he rested a hand gently on Nigel's shoulder.

"... What is this I hear about gummy bears?"

She hissed an intake of breath at the scarring, frowning. "I want you to see Helen first thing in the morning. They look like they could come out now," she bit her lip and turned to keep from tracing her fingers over the scars, a surge of anger flashing through her. The Cabal seemed to be nothing but butchers and she was looking forward to a confrontation with them.

Will offered a distraction from darker thoughts and she took it gratefully. "You heard of the possibility of me sharing them. If you ask nicely. Maybe."

Nigel just nodded, pulling his shirt back on. He had been hoping to get rid of them now, but-- He sighed and pulled the sweater around him again, wrapping his hands around the warm mug. He settled under the sweater as Will and Devon talked, slowly just fading away and not even realizing it.
