That square package lying in the middle of their room - it was what he thought it was. Yami's eyes weren't deceiving him. Sheets.
For the last couple weeks, Yami hadn't spent much time sleeping at home. During the daytime hours, he'd mind the shop when he was supposed to But he was loathe to turn down an offer from Mokuba, and staying the night with him was just convenient. It had taken a little time to notice the small changes at first, but now they were apparent. A little cleaning here, some re-arranging there... Alone, it wouldn't have been evidence of much, but knowing that Yuugi was seeing someone - likely the same person from that phone call a while back - made the intentions obvious.
"Yuugi..." he called, his voice stretching with every syllable to accommodate his growing curiosity. He waited patiently.
There was little hesitation. Almost immediately, Yuugi exited the kitchen and climbed the stairs. "What's wrong, Yami? Can't find something? I did do some cleaning while you were gone..." Helpful, as always.
"Are those new sheets?"
Yami's eyes were fast enough to catch a lip being bitten. Yuugi already looked as though he were on the defense. "...Look, I'm just-um..."
Sitting down on their carpeted floor, Yami picked at the plastic wrap on the package, peeing at the image of the bed displayed on the label. Something caught his eye. "Ooh. Satin." His eyes glistened with filthy thoughts, and he was sure that Yuugi would be able to read them without help.
Yuugi sighed, hands rubbing across his face. "Yes. Yes. I'm having company over! Stop badgering me!"
Eyebrows rose at the confession. "Company that you're trying to impress?"
Yuugi wouldn't look at him. "Obviously. Stop being a dick."
"I'm not-I'm not," he said, trying to reassure both Yuugi and himself. His other half could be so timid sometimes. "I just wanted to wish you good luck, is all. Ra, why are you so nervous?"
Pink spread across Yuugi's features. "Because I'm a grown man sharing a room, maybe? Because I still live with my Grandfather? Because I work at a game shop?"
The questions caught Yami off guard. "What?"
"She's going to think I'm...lazy," Yuugi told him. All traces of his blush were gone; doubt carried in each word he spoke.
Of all things, Yami hadn't been expecting a breakdown. Yuugi plopped down on the floor next to him. The suddenness of the change of mood was something that Yami couldn't immediately cope with. They sat for a moment or two silence in before he spoke.
Their arrangement was just convenient, really. Sugoroku kept a spare room for guests, but either of them could have taken it at any time. Fact was it wasn't hard for the two of them to share the same space, physically. Being in close quarters due to the Puzzle wasn't the same, but he two of them knew each other's habits. There were plenty of ways for them to get space when they needed it. More often than not, though, it was comforting having Yuugi so close. Even when they were angry at each other. Their mental link seemed geared at reconciling those sorts of feelings. It was a rare occasion when they couldn't talk things through, even if a break was required first.
Was it really that big a deal - something that Yuugi could be ridiculed over? He thought that roommates were pretty common.
"Yuugi," Yami asked, dropping the jovial tone, "Why would-" he struggled for a moment, trying to remember. "...he...? She...?"
"She," Yuugi supplied.
"Why would she think terrible of you for the way that you live? You're not lazy, Yuugi." Maybe reminding him would help. "You could go out on his own if he wanted but honestly stays at home to help his grandfather. You have your own car! You're putting yourself through school and at the same time helping to manage a retail store! That's a lot. It's a heavy burden!"
Yuugi shook his head. But being modest wasn't going to help. Yami knew from experience that confident people were attractive, and neither of them had reason to not be.
"And at the same time you take care of Gramps and make sure that he's got all of his medicine, you take him to the hospital if there's the slightest irregularity - you're a wonderful grandson. Whoever this woman is, she could only hope to find another person who is capable of taking care of her just as well."
Yami's hands had found their way to Yuugi's shoulders, forcing the slighter to look at him as he spoke, to see that he meant every word. He leaned in, their foreheads touching. After another moment, he hugged Yuugi tightly.
"She's lucky to have gotten your attention, in my opinion."
"It's the other way around..." Yuugi let loose a breathy giggle.
He wanted to be encouraging. Clearly there was a need for it. "And I'm glad that you feel that way about her," Yami said. "How long have you been seeing each other?"
"A few months. But I've known her for a while. We just - I wasn't in the right place. She's been asking for a long time."
Yami nodded. "Is she a classmate of yours?"
Yuugi shook his head.
When he didn't offer her name or any information about her, Yami decided not to push it. "Whoever she is, she had better know that you put this much thought into her making an appearance. When is she coming over?"
"A few days from now." Yuugi breath tickled Yami's cheeks as he spoke, and the latter couldn't help but smile.
"Would you like me gone from the house after work?"
Dark eyelashes heavy with moisture blinked, looking away. "Please."
"Well, I'm going to need to know what day is it so that I don't stumble in while you two are-"
Bright eyes widened, and the blush returned full force. "Yami!"
"Yuugi. You bought new sheets." He scanned the package again. "...does that say 'onyx'?"
"It doesn't matter what it says!" He pouted, and Yami thought it very cute.
Had Yuugi despaired over impressing like this? It was weird, in a good way, watching Yuugi go through this again with someone else.
"I'll tell you when we decide. She had a busy schedule because she's taking a lot of classes right now, but I'll let you know. I promise."
Yami didn't approve of this extra measure of secrecy, but he didn't want to argue about it, either. "Alright. Now stop moping around. What else do you have to do today?"
