I once messed up an online funds transfer with Wells Fargo and incurred a bunch of fees but they weren't really willing to be nice about my screw-up. Other than that I really haven't had any problems with them.
I've found that if your home back (i.e. the one you signed up at) is in a small town they're more willing to help you. I've never screwed up, but in the past I made a mistake and I just called the bank directly and they were willing to help more than the 1-800 number would've been, I think.
I've been with Wells Fargo for years and won't ever switch. If you have Over-Draft protection you won't have to pay fees if you over draft. I've only done it once in college, but it was worth it (I think it only works if you have money in your savings, though).
But most of all I LOVE them because they have banks in my grocery store. :) It makes for easy banking. It's also the only bank that is also in my parents home town, and my mom likes to occasionally send me little "gifts" through their online banking. So, yeah, I'll probably never leave it!
As everyone says every time this question is asked, I think it all depends on what kind of banking you'll be doing, what services you will need and how much money you are keeping with them. I had B of A for a few years and HATED them, for instance, mostly because the tellers were so rude at the branch I visited a few times a week.
I now love Wells Fargo, but then, I also have six accounts with them (two business, two personal checking and two savings) and I go into the actual bank a lot. Also, I don't bounce checks or overdraw my accounts, so the fees that people say are outrageous don't affect me.
Maybe you would like a credit union instead of a big bank if B of A has been no good for you?
i dont need a lot from my bank. so i go through washington mutual. it's so easy. and most of the locations have a small line to get things accomplished. and the customer service is great on the phone! you talk to a human being within 2 minutes of calling. you don't have to go through thousands of menus (for example: don't ever call AT&T).
I have had a laundry list of problems with BofA for many years.
When I used to live here, my wife and I used Washington Mutual, and were happy with the service, options, experience, etc. We were gone for a few years and just got back; we reopened an account with them, but that was only a couple weeks ago. So far they seem to be good still, but it's too early to say.
Point being: tentative recommendation of wamu, assuming they haven't changed too much since last we used them.
ps - this is with the caveat that an important factor for us is that the bank have locations all over the country. If that's not a factor for you, credit unions and local community banks are almost always the best (we tend to have accounts at them too in the areas we live).
and so ends my post that is of little help, I'm sure ;)
