All children like presents and the Gamgees were no exception. It might even be argued that hobbit children like surprises and gifts best of all the folk of Middle Earth. Four days after Solstice, the hobbits notice that one of Sam's trees has been wrapped with strings of cranberries and popcorn. Silvery glass balls are hanging from branches. Beneath the tree are dolls, plush animals, sets of paper and coloured pencils, tin knights and dragons, and wooden blocks. A basket labeled "Mr. and Mrs. Gamgee holds a plum pudding and a bottle of wine."
