when I hear people's reactions when I tell them that I'm starting a club, I realize more and more that the people in Newton are no better than anyone else. I hear constantly that Newton is a place where the people are liberal and educated, but I constantly see contradictions, especially among its youth. I tell people about my ambition to change ( Read more... )

It sucks, but that's the way things are. In life you are going to have to constantly put up with people who do not agree with your view of things, no matter how rational and correct you think your opinion is. I'm sure eventually you will find your own way to change things, but a club might not be the best way, at least here, or with these people. At least you are ambitious.

Hey Eliza, I haven't talked to you in a long long time. Anyway this summer I was in El Salvador and basically came back with/still are dealing with many of the stuff you've been talking about. Anyway for my WISE project I'm going to be organizing a trip down to the Gulf Coast in order to waken some kids up by witnessing what the US is failing at firsthand and helping out while we're down there. Let me know if you're interested in getting involved/want more information.

Even if you are just "holding signs in front of people who already agree with you," you are making a difference, no matter how subtle a difference some people might see it.

personally i think its silly to not do something because you speculate that it will not be effective even though you really dont know until you try.

Holding signs up in newton doesn't have a huge effect. Holding signs up in a swing state has a bigger effect mostly because MA will go dem and at this moment anti-war. But if you draw great attention to yourself by let's getting a group of people to just sit in the main intersection at Newton Center until we withdraw from Iraq (or are sent to jail for obstruction of traffic, at which point you get out on bail and go do it again and go back to jail and not get out on bail) that will draw alot of attention and hopefully inspire people outside of MA to change how they feel ( ... )

i've thought about both sitting in an intersection and writing letters to senators, and i think that you're right. both of those would be more effective than holding signs. but my plan is to get people on my side through a club first, then separate from the school so they can't expel or suspend me or anything like that and go bigger. its a process, and i need to first make sure that i have people on my side who are serious, so i know that they can hande serious protests.

additionally, my goal is not to convince people to agree with me. it is to put pressure on people to do something proactive about things they already agree with, because nobody is doing that. i want to put pressure on the government and the people and i do aim to go national. it just starts a little smaller than that, and i need a base of people who will help.
