Coalition games in Greece

For what it’s worth, as someone who has never even been in Greece but loves following post-election coalition negotiations for pleasure: my reading of ND leader Samaras' announcement yesterday that he can't form a coalition is as follows.

Fresh elections might result in Syriza being the largest party as the anti-bailout voters unite behind them, and the extra 50 seats would probably be pretty helpful in putting together a left-wing anti-bailout coalition.

Was just coming here to say that.

Syriza + Democratic Left + Independent Greeks + 50 seat bonus is close to a majority.

We shall see. Fresh elections add more months of drift. Of course, that doesn't mean they aren't going to happen. But I wouldn't assume from the early he-says-she-says game that they will.
