Ever since I lived in Boston, I've made it a point to smile at every questionable or street person I see. I also apologize for not giving money to spangers. And I have had so many good or funny encounters because of it. From the heavy set street spanger guy who always caught my eye and gave me a compliment on my appearance (I eventually gave up my latte and croissant's so he could have the three bucks) to the kid who, once I told him that I could spare any extra change so he could buy beer, who then asked if I could spare my phone number and go on a date. (I always wonder who would have paid?) The only bad experience the the street musician who asked me to marry him and move to Palestine to "kill the Israelites", and he was one of the least dangerous looking ones. I try to remember these lessons when I am with the kids. I encourage them to ask people why they pierced their whatever or say how cool the purple hair is. But sometimes it is really hard to get past those first impressions.
