Ever felt completely invisible?

I’m at home in Wolves for a couple of days, as Suzie needed to collect some stuff from her parents. My dear mother’s reaction when I told her I was coming home? “Oh good, you can sit round your sister’s house whilst the workman are there, keep an eye on things.” Yeah. Great. Thanks for that ( Read more... )

fandom owns my soul, x-files is my religion, i get overly passionate about stuff, sci-fi, the other dirty f word

I don't think SFX mag was all that bad. I used to buy it all the time when I was younger. I don't remember it being sexiest even when it had their readers poll of sexiest people in sci-fi it had both a top 10 of women and men.

Althou I remember one time I was buying it in WHSmith and it had Sarah Michelle Gellar on the front, inside was an interview to do with Buffy and the front cover picture of Sarah was covering the bottom of the F in SFX and the lady behind the till said "Are you old enough to be buying Sex magazine?" and I had to explain to her that it was a science fiction magazine by showing her the insides and how all the articles where sci-fi related.

I haven't read SFX in a while, I might buy an issue and give it a go.

Not completely relevant but what you wrote reminded me of this. I had a Gender Psychology class 2 semesters ago and we found out that even though cartoons are watched equally by males and females, they are marketed more towards males. The reason for this is because girls will watch 'boy' cartoons where as boys will not sit through 'girl' cartoons. Sad but true.

Yeah, I think I saw that somewhere before. It's very aggravating. :(

Because I’m feeling a desperate need to read something by people who know what they are talking about. And those people are right here. They are fandom people.
Yeah, i think you're having an issue with quality in general than the feminist thing. That's what the free market is about; people like you who see a deficiency and supply a need that no one's producing. GO FOR IT, BABE.

Ha, thanks. I'm actually seriously wondering about how difficult it would be to set up a website for this sort of thing. I'm gonna have a think.

I agree. Maybe we should start our own magazine. It'd be totally doable.

Would a magazine be doable? I'm thinking of they money it would involve. Online might be possible, though.

1. Read SFX and Death Ray.

2. Thank you for mentioning Sanctuary. I had a fansquee moment :)

3. I'd be all over an online fanzine. I mean really, you're talking to the wanna be journalist here. We would, however, need some people who were very good at art and whatnot. It would be very time consuming and cost actual money aswell. You'd have to have a team that ranged between several fandoms, and accept all the general bitchiness/hierarchy and deadline problems that would ensue. But I promise it would be worthwhile. If it was done the right way, you'd be in touch with some pretty important people alone the line, it would be a great experience. I can talk to Thomasina about it, she'd be all over it.. (I just googled her for the first time: my God I *know* this woman! http://www.cult.tv/index.php?cm_id=44&cm_type=article)

So basically, if you understand all that it would entail, I'd be right there with you. :)

3. Mind's Eye was a damn good episode.

1. Thanks, I'll check them out

2. Yeah, I thought of you as I did so. ;)

3. I had thought of you as soon as the idea cropped in my head. Yeah, at the moment I'm between just starting a little thing on LJ or thinking "well, if you're gonna do it, do it properly." We should discuss when I'm over. :)

4. Lili Taylor ftw.

1. I'm all about SFX, I buy every issue. No, I am not biased because they did a 2 page spread on Sanctuary and Thomasina works for them :p Death Ray are new, but they had 12 page book section, which instantly won my approval...

2. I love that show so much.. OMG you'll be here for the premiere of wep 3! :D Its on Monday... my HD laptop screen FTW!!!!

3. Absolutely... ooh I'm excited now! *has too many ideas in her head for her own good* An e-zine would take more effort, but it would be more satisfying and have a bigger payoff I think...

3. Indeed :D
