And sorry to say your understanding is pretty much entirely wrong! The ice cover is what caused plains and flat expanses. The rocky ice wore down hills and filled in valleys and crevices leaving a level plain. Hills are made by faulting (the movement of tectonic plates, as the plates grind together Earth is pushed upwards), erosion of mountains over time (in turn made by faulting, this is just the hill on the way down rather than the way up), and also by movement of sediment by glaciers. Now go simplify that for Joey to make sure you both understand ;)
