In which I will never, ever understand RPF

Jared Padalecki announces his wife is pregnant with their first child.

Some fans: "Awww, yay, that's so sweet, I'm so happy for them and their little family." This would be considered a normal reaction.
Most fans: "OMG PADABABY! IT SHALL BE A BABY MOOSE. I SHALL SEND THEM PRESENTS OF THINGS WITH MOOSES!! EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL AND NOTHING ( Read more... )

i get overly passionate about stuff, fanfic, why does this need saying?, supernatural

It actually scares me that they've already named it PADABABY. DO PEOPLE NOT SEE HOW CREEPY THAT IS?

I get concerned by the whole idea of "Hey, new fandom thing!!!eleventyone11!!!" It's not part of your fandom. It's an actor's baby. Just...leave it, please. Idk. :/

I belong to the first group of "oh how sweet!" I've never been into RPF. I find it invasive of the actors' lives.

Exactly. It gives me creepy shivers down my back, to be honest. I think it's because I come from the X-Files fandom originally, and there RPF is very much this dirty little secret, hidden away from the main bulk of fic, written mostly by people using sock-puppets as to not identify themselves as the author. So to come into the SPN fandom and see everyone so completely glib and open about it was a massive culture shock to me.

I like the Baby Moose thing, even more because JarPad loves it too. :D *smishes* ♥

But the RPF thing... yeah. WEEEEIRD. :| Never understood it and it was never my cup of tea. I generally make a grunt of dissaproval and skip anything that has anything to do with it.

LOL. I am most amused by all the moose-calf pictures on Tumblr, I have to admit. But yeah, the Moose thing is something he's hapily claimed for himself, so you know, little different.

Hehehe, saw one pic of a little baby smiling and dressed in a moose costume and it is adoooorable. :D

But TBH I only hear about these RPF weird people from other people's blogs, I tend to stay clear away from all of that. I think I'm only in one or two SPN comms.

I have just un-watched the general fic comm I follow because it's just bothering me too much. But it's hard, because on one hand I really like engaging with the saner parts of this fandom, and in the other, it's so intermingled I actually find RPF really hard to avoid. Someone commented on tumblr the other day that they were a 'Destiel' fan, and that therefore 'of course it follows I'm a 'Cockles' fan too' and I'm like, NO IT DOESN'T! IT DOESN'T FOLLOW AT ALL! IT'S COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! And don't get me started on the ridiculousness of this whole name combining either. Total fandom(s) pet peeve.

This is exactly why the SPN fandom scares me. :/

I hear ya. :/ Which is such a shame, because it's this one side of crazy fandom that manages to speak for all of it and therefore puts intelligent viewers off the show.

THIS

Becase there's the other side to this fandom that is amazing, but sadly they/we are not AS loud and ~dramatic as the other ones. :/

That's just creepy...

Like etoile444 said, RPF is incredibly invasive of actor's lives. It just crosses a line from fangirl into stalker territory.
Farscape fandom has a few of these as well, "fans" who want Ben & Claudia to dump their spouses and marry each other instead. They're completely ignoring the actors' feelings - as if what the actors themselves want doesn't matter, it's all about what they want. It's just so creepy and dehumanising.

And also, just kind of...blending the lines of reality a little bit? It's no secret that the SPN boys are the best of friends, but I don't don't tend to wonder around in a haze of homoerotic lust for my BBFs and I'm assuming they don't either...
