Returning to San Francisco, I discovered that they now have Sudoku in the SF Chronicle, which I'd never noticed before (I never read papers anymore). Anyways, for a more details discussion of the phenomenon (including the kanji which I was trying to guess at): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudoku
