While we were doing West Side Story a couple weeks ago in Grenoble the bathroom was a unisex one. There was always a line for the stalls but the urinals were always free. I felt embarassed just standing around while the men, um, took care of business in front of me. I got used to it after a while though, I think you're right about how if people treat it as though it's no big deal it makes you feel more comfortable too!

I think there's also something to be said for the fact that I've been sharing the bathroom with strangers and not people I know, like my female coworkers. That would probably be a much different experience. All a part of conforming to norms, I suppose.

Unisex bathrooms are common here too, but with urinals, is new to me.
Well, except for a Hong Kong convention centre's arrangement of making a male bathroom into a temporary female bathroom by just changing the signage, so it was a female bathroom (according to the door sign) with a line of urinals along the wall. I honestly did a U-turn to look at the door sign again. It was an interesting sight though, heh.

So all the uni-sex bathrooms in Macau are individual stalls, with a shared sink?
