81/100

I so was going to stop, but then I saw the options for the next challenge (which I skipped in my last post) and... well, the idea kind of popped into my head fully-formed. So... three more! Although there's REALLY only one. Since they're all for Challenge #80. The photograph doesn't appear in all three, but they ARE all interconnected. I figured it still counts!

Cassandra's dog ran under Janet's feet and she stumbled forward. "Whoa," Sam said, barely catching Janet before she fell. "Whoa. You... you okay?"

"Yeah," Janet breathed, smiling and embarrassed. She looked into Sam's eyes.

A camera flashed nearby, but they noticed neither it nor the photographer as he continued his circuit of the barbeque.

"Love does not begin the way we seem to think it does," Janet whispered.

"What?"

"Sh," Janet whispered. Their bodies were pressed tight, her hands on Sam's shoulders as she was held in strong, sure arms. She turned her lips to Sam's for their first kiss.

Everyone said she was taking it well. Crying over her loss, but not torn apart with grief. Not until she went through Janet's things.

She found the quote book in Janet's desk drawer and thumbed through. The photo of them at the barbeque, looking deeply into each other's eyes, had been marking a page. Highlighted in the center of the page was this: "Love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within."

Sam threw the book across the room and cursed it as she sank to the floor, sobbing into her hands.

Sam never heard the full quote until years later. She was at a red light, drumming her fingers on the steering wheel, when the station's 'Daily Affirmation' came on. Today, it was a quote by James Baldwin, the DJ said. "Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up."

Sam closed her eyes and felt a tear slide down her cheek. Janet had just spoken to her. Years after her death, Janet had still touched her.

She whispered, "I love you, Janet."
