It's a tie-in. Instead of doing "Lost" novels that follow the story being played out on the show, they opted to publish a book supposedly written by somebody who died in the original plane crash.

Yeah, that's what I kinda figured. It just threw the fannish part of my brain for a loop, since I'm not used to fandom crossing over into reality like that. My tie-ins tend to be more blatant. :-P
