I decided to go ahead and enjoy myself as much as poss because standing there miserable and gittish doesn't help anyone. The fact is I was there and listened to some great music. Regardless of the outcome and the performer's intention, my intention was sound and that is my justification. The end. ;)

From the point of view of someone who was actually there, who would you say put on the best show?

Robbie Williams is always good, he probably got the crowd going the most. I also enjoyed Scissor Sisters and REM, and Madonna put on a pretty decent effort too. I also enjoyed Annie Lennox and Sting, just because I'll never pay money to see them live, so it was a once in a lifetime experience type thing.
Overall I thought the crowd was too big to work though, it was most noticeable when people were trying to clap along, as often the picture on the screens didn't quite match the sound (as it was so far away the pictures were reaching us before the sound) so it was really hard to get anything going. Plus there were some people there who were quite gittish and miserable (as fresh_feeling mentions) so there wasn't the same atmosphere as you get at a gig when everyone is there to see the same band, it was obvious some people had just come to watch one of the acts and weren't interested in the others :(
