“Oi,” Zoro mumbled, and Vivi turned to where he was sat, back leant against the mast. His legs were sprawled out in front of him and Nami had gracefully settled between them, much to Zoro’s apparent annoyance.

“You make a good chair,” she observed lightly as Zoro frowned at the back of her head. “Warm. Which is good, since I’m still so very, very weak,” she continued with a melodramatic and piteous sigh that didn’t quite match the mischievous gleam in her eye.

“Poor Nami-swan!” Sanji exploded, suddenly enough that Vivi noticed the small reindeer beside her jump slightly. Sanji twirled across the deck, tray loaded with mugs expertly balanced on one hand, before ducking down beside Nami. “Here, my most beautiful and brave Nami-swan, this is made for you from my love and adoration,” he cooed, pressing a mug of hot chocolate into her waiting hands. “Please, do not hesitate to call if you need anything. Food, drink, massage…”

Nami waved a dismissive hand at him, leaning with her back pressed against Zoro’s chest as she sipped her drink. “Mmm, delicious,” she purred, beaming up at Sanji’s look of rapture.

For a moment, Vivi was worried that Sanji might faint, before he swayed slightly on the spot, one hand clutched to his heart, the other holding the tray aloft. “Oh, Nami-swan, you are so kind and gracious,” he cried, eyes sparkling with happiness.

Zoro made a noise that sounded suspiciously like a snort and rolled his eyes.

Sanji’s joyous manner dropped instantly, a deep frown overtaking his face. “Don’t you dare move, shithead,” he growled, voice dripping with threat. “Make sure she’s comfortable, or else.”

Zoro’s eyes narrowed as Sanji stalked away, but he remained still as Nami fidgeted and settled against him, hands cradling the mug in front of her.

“Here, Vivi-chwan,” Sanji sang, holding out a mug for her with a broad grin on his face. “Please accept this token of my affection.”

Vivi smiled as she wrapped her hands around the warm mug, the chocolate aroma coaxing her senses. “Thank you, Sanji-kun,” she replied, and Sanji beamed wider still.

Luffy and Usopp were already lined up, hands outstretched, when he turned to them.

“Marshmallows?” Luffy said, eyes unblinking and an expectant smile on his face.

Vivi could almost hear Sanji’s teeth grind, but he didn’t say a word as he turned and headed back to the kitchen, Luffy and Usopp following entirely too closely behind, arms waving as they loudly sang “Marshmallows, marshmallows, marshmallows!”

Vivi smiled and turned back to Drum Island, slowly sinking into the distance. Snowflakes twisted through the air, petal pink and enthralling as they arched above the curiously shaped mountain. The illusion of cherry blossoms, the invitation of shade and strength, seemed to tug at something within her. Something that felt a little like home, no matter that she belonged in desert sands, not snow storms. Something comforting and familiar, something that made her wonder and glance down at the reindeer beside her.

Chopper was staring back at his homeland, eyes wide and bright, hooves pressed against the railings. He was shivering ever so slightly, barely noticeable, and Vivi could guess it had nothing to do with the chill air that ruffled his fur. She wanted to say something, wanted to reassure him, comfort him, but the words were caught in her throat.

Chopper had made a choice to follow Luffy, and Luffy had made a choice to help Vivi home. There was a war ahead of them, and Vivi wondered if Chopper understood that, and if he was ready.

She certainly didn’t feel ready.

Chopper’s ear twitched slightly, and they both turned to see Sanji approaching. Luffy and Usopp, having acquired marshmallows for their hot chocolate, had joined Nami and Zoro. Luffy was slumped across their legs, rubbery arm stretched out and attempting to sneak around Usopp, who was leaning against Nami’s side.

Sanji leant down, handing Chopper the final mug with a wink, and stepped back to join the rest of the crew.

Vivi felt a flare of feeling in her chest, warmth rushing through her, and smiled to herself. Perhaps it wasn’t snow or cherry blossoms that felt so familiar. Perhaps it was facing a new experience with her nakama, and she watched as Usopp gave a strangled yell as Luffy succeeded in stealing the last of his marshmallows, as Sanji dug his foot into Zoro’s shin and Zoro attempted to shove him back without disturbing a giggling Nami, and the feeling of being home grew within her. All touching, always touching, closer than anyone could ever know, family and more, and Vivi might never adjust to being a part of that, the honour of it, but she knew she was accepted implicitly. They were so magnificent in their strength, in their unity, and they made her feel beautiful and they made her feel safe.

She reached out her hand and Chopper blinked up at her.

“Come on,” she said with a gentle smile. “You’re a part of this now. Right?”

Chopper’s eyes flickered over to the others, than back to her, and there was a wide and genuine smile on his face as he pressed his hoof into her palm and allowed her to guide him towards their nakama.
