... in the comments to the last post about Into The Woods, a passing reference to children and fairy tales put me in mind of this poem... and for no other reason than I love it and want to share it...

My favourite poet, definitely :) (and given that my favourite novelist is Ogden Nash... um and now that I think about it my favourite songwriters are Flanders and Swann and Tom Lehrer, it all says something about my deeply serious and meaningful side or lack thereof :)

It's very true.

I remember that on my very first day at school, aged five, some other poor little mite in my class was crying for his mother all day. Was I sympathetic? No, I just thought: "How wet."

It is, isn't it? The ones I recall best from my childhood are the darkest (I think the VERY darkest was the Little Fir Tree, which I still dream about every so often...)
