Birds, A Rec... and a Ridiculous Ficlet

It's been a mild, quite damp spring so far... which suits the duck community on campus perfectly well :) Out at lunch, I've been watching at least four families of 'em, fussy parents and 8-10 scuttling bubs, all of whom are made very happy by the rain the last few days filling the ponds and leaving puddles everywhere for them.

Definitely cuteness ( Read more... )

Avon considered his options. They seemed dim. Then things became very bright. The ...chick... glowed and vanished. Avon didn't believe in Higher Beings, so his moment of gratitude to the universe was brief, followed by the thought that this was unlikely to be entirely an improvement in the situation.

His nestmate had at least kept down the worms, which were rather like boa constrictors, albeit pink, ringed with ridges and toothless. He hoped they were toothless. He edged further away from one that seemed to be sniffing his boot.

By the time Vila appeared, wild-eyed and tousled (well, as tousled as possible considering his follicular population), thrusting a teleport bracelet into Avon's hand, Avon was quite ready to leave.

They appeared on the teleport platform. Avon slipped in something unmentionable and fell on his backside, staring up at the floating bits of lime-green fluff. The next instant he was half-smothered by a hysterically basso cheeping 'baby'. In the corner of his vision, he could see Cally tugging on a wing-stub.

*giggle* Poor Avon. I can see Cally sending him down after 'lunch' for the baby because, after all, he has experience with the worms.

And when Avon was sure the others couldn't see, he returned the cuddle, rather enjoying warmth and misguided affection?

Maybe it wasn't a toy teddy he had as a kid, but a toy Big Bird...

Of sorts.

Oh dear, plot bunnies (or rather chickies) abound...

That's another one to add to the list of "Down and...."

One of the fanzines had hilarious illustrations of various teleport mishaps, but being mistaken for "mother" by a baby jabberwock wasn't among them.
