Before we moved out of England, we lived not far from the Willaston World Worm Charming Festival and the International Cheese Show at Acton. Both taken very seriously.
I have a feeling most countries have their weird side :) There are quite a few places here that have races for frogs, flies (don't ask) boat races in the desert...
the mullet toss thing is probably still going on. i don't recall if it's a yearly or bi-/ more-yearly thing, but like salmon, the mullet die in droves after they spawn. they just die in brackish waters like Mobile Bay and probably some bays in the Florida panhandle.
the fruitcake thing is undoubtedly because American recipes for fruitcake are almost all awful. at least to most Americans. the joke is that there's just one cake that gets re-sent around and around every Christmas... ;)
Obviously our fruitcakes (classic English ones, used for weddings and Christmas as well) is different, as it is a thing of joy, especially made months early, frozen, and then periodically spiked...
But I have noticed (or read) that different foods taste surprisingly different - even white bread, I've seen several olk mention US plain white bread is sweeter than ours (often when discussing why the Aussie sausage sanger is another thing of joy :)
