HEY IT'S A PARTY THREAD HERE note_atem December 16 2010, 23:43:16 UTC
Welcome to the birthday party! This party is for Yuuki, a little newly turned six year old girl. Feel free to set your presents down on the table if you brought any. Go mingle with the guests. Eat! Have fun! Just make sure to say happy birthday to the birthday gal, of course.

There might be a party going on in the main room, but that wasn't really Kaiba's focus. Sure, he actually showed up. It certainly wasn't because of Atem's orders. Of course not. The (slightly modified to keep the volume high) hand-held game system and Duel Monsters booster pack into present pile weren't there because he had any interest in Yuuki's welfare. Certainly not. And he most definitely wasn't there to talk to anyone.

No, there were ulterior motives involved. It was what had lured him into the kitchen in the hope of finding somewhere to put that abandoned bottle of wine where it wouldn't automatically be thrown back on his doorstep again.

Hm, maybe in the microwave? Then Atem would at least have to pick it up and look at it before he removed it.

Yuuki certainly was enjoying her birthday party. Though she noticed one person hadn't shown up yet...Mister Kaiba. But! Maybe he would show up later! Maybe towards the end...at least that's what she hoped.

but for the moment she wanted to head back into the kitchen to help her Daddy's out. She knew there were more napkins in here..she just had to figure out where...but her search quickly came to a hold when she saw Kaiba standing there ...in the kitchen.

..She did the only thing a little kid, one that was hyped up on sugar, would do. She quickly latched onto his leg.

"Mister Kaiba!"

At that exclamation, Kaiba bit back a curse and abruptly shoved the bottle into the nearest cabinet. It was only by grace of his height that it was too high for Yuuki to reach.

"..Yuuki," he said in way of greeting, finally looking down at the thing that had curled around his leg. "You can let go now."

Yuuki shook her head. She had only seen Kaiba a few times this past month and wanted to make up for lost time. She did, however, look up at him with a bright smile on her face.

"I'm so happy you could come! I can show you my birthday cake! And my presents! And! And! Papa Atem is here too!" the little girl was super excited, could you tell?

The brunet shifted awkwardly. Ah. How to deal with this?

"I saw the birthday cake. It is...very large," he said hesitantly. He had no interests in birthday cakes, or any cakes for that matter. It had gone unnoticed, as did who was actually there at the time. There were more important things to be done.

"There are quite a few people here. He was successful, it seems," he continued in the same cautious tone. "But I'm afraid I cannot stay long."

"Isn't it cool! It looks just like a present!" She really wanted to show Kaiba everything that was happening in her party. From the cake down to the presents.

Then, just like that, her excitement dropped down. Kaiba had to leave...but he couldn't! He had to at least stay for cake! She clung a bit tighter to his leg and shook her head.

"You have to stay, it's a party!"

Kaiba's lips twitched into a frown. This wasn't going nearly as well as he had planned. What was it with kids and them trying to force him to be social? Mokuba had tried it too, though his brother was far sneakier with it.

Carefully the CEO lowered himself to her eyelevel, the better to keep her calm and rational about this. Kids were capable of it, he knew.

"I'm still very busy, Yuuki. My work was burned up by someone days ago. I have to clean up," he said calmly. "But it's a..pleasant party, and I know you'll like what I got for you."

That was what kids cared about in the end.

Atem hadn't overheard what was going on in the kitchen, but had wandered in there to throw away some trash. He observed this little scene in the kitchen, turning a curious eye to it. But he said nothing until the trash was discarded, then he turned to wash his hands.

Once he was finished he dried them and then finally turned to the two.

"What's going on in here?"

She understood he was busy, yet she still had hope that he would take time out of his schedule to stay at the party. Everyone else did! Why couldn't he?

The little girl bowed her head a little feeling sad that she couldn't convince Kaiba to stay.

"...I don't care about the presents.. I want you to stay..." she murmured, trying hard not to cry. She looked to the side when she heard Atem's voice. She wanted to tell on Kaiba, but..that might get her in trouble. Instead she got off of him and moved back to Atem, sulking a little.

"..nothing, Papa..."

"Trust me," Kaiba said, making an attempt to reassure her, "you won't have any time to think about the other people here when you open your gift. You'll-"

He paused as Atem approached. Almost immediately he rose back to his full height and straightened up against the counter. The last thing he needed was for the other to see the little girl upset, or his rival making any concessions at all to a little girl. At least the wine was safely stowed.

"I was getting some water," the brunet said coolly, "and Yuuki came in. You should really allow for people who aren't interested in liquid sugar the next time you throw one of these things."

"I have bottled water in the fridge, if you'd rather." Drinking from the faucet never bothered him, but he could have sworn he'd seen someone complain about it at some point. Kaiba out of all of them would have the most delicate sensibilities towards these sorts of things. Of course.

But he bent down to Yuuki, giving her a pat on the head. She looked rather sad. This was no good. "What's wrong?" A quick warning glance up to Kaiba. Yuuki's mood was fine before she'd come in here and spoken with the brunet. That had to mean this was his fault somehow.

Yuuki looked up at her dad then back at Kaiba before lowering her head. She didn't want to lie to her dad about being upset...but she didn't want Kaiba to dislike her for telling on him. Trying really hard to keep her emotions under control, she looked up at Atem.

"..nothing.." she said, trying to sound more reassuring, not realizing her eyes were starting to water.

Those beginnings of tears made his throat tighten. Yuugi had damaged this girl irreparably, that much was clear. No orphan would react so strongly to disappointment, even at this age. After you had lost your entire world, something as minor as not having a guest stay as long as you wanted was nothing. Especially if you got presents anyway.

Feeling a bit lost for what to do, Kaiba's eyes rose to Atem's instead. The warning glance was more familiar, and much easier to deal with.

"Bottled water and tap water on this Island both come from the same source. It doesn't matter which," Kaiba said, holding onto it in an attempt to control the subject of conversation.

"Something." He murmured, hand reaching up to tilt her chin, and her gaze, back up to his. She was clearly upset and that was not okay. This was exactly the opposite of what he wanted. It was her birthday. She wasn't supposed to be crying.

Though his own eyes rose back up to Kaiba's. "Then take one." His tone here was a little tight, already slightly angry with the situation. He wasn't sure what Kaiba did.

Uh oh...she managed to get Kaiba in trouble. Something she didn't want to do. She sniffed a little before pulling back to rub her eyes, trying to get rid of the tears.

"..Nothing, just a stomach ache..." she murmured. granted, she didn't want to lie, but...if Kaiba got into trouble, he would be mad at her. Then he wouldn't want her near him ever again.

And that, could never ever happen.
