As a parent who saw their first child off to school last year I can totally relate to how the Doctor is feeling though he probably feels it a little more strongly considering his history (well the Timelords history). It's very hard to let go and you worry incesantly that first couple of days but then you see your child come home and tell you all about their wonderful day and bring home pictures of the family like Ellie did and you start to relax and really understand the the advantages of them going. There world just got a little bigger but they still come home and love you.
