It is certainly really really hard to get enough rivalry with Isabela to do it. You kind of have to be a humorless ass--I did it on a playthrough as an aggressive female Hawke who rivaled almost EVERYONE, and even then I struggled to get enough rivalry with Isabela to pull it off, because she does get those friendship bonuses for flirting. Basically you have to have her almost fully into rivalry by the end of Act I, or flirting with her in Act 2 will push her too far into friendship for it to work. I have seen a lot of people claim that rival romancing her is impossible, but I think they just mean "it's hard and I couldn't pull it off," like how people get all bent out of shape because they can't get enough points with Fenris to have him stay loyal if they [THIS IS A SPOILER IF YOU'RE READING THIS TRACY] side with the mages in the endgame. Like . . . you basically just have to know what you're doing. And in Isabela's case, I was metagaming pretty hard ( ... )
