Hmm, for lighting, I tend to abuse the infamous gaussian blurred light blobs (mastered by makers such as letsey-x or neversleeps.) When I use them in an icon where the subject's face is close up, I tend to (but not always, depends on the picture) place light blobs on one side of their face / near the eye (like in no. 20 or 24.) I think it creates a nice contrast when one side is bright and warm, while the other side is a little more toned down. Hope that helps a little bit :)
