Our secret
It was the best job in his life. The laughs filling the large area, the smiling faces, the children were running everywhere screaming happily. Of course from time to time there was a cry of pain; a little boy who ran into a wall, or tripped on his lace during a game. But quickly the cry and the painful memory would vanish as he ran towards the poor boy, caressed the inexistent wound and kissed the wet cheek. Then he would help him to stand up, and with a gentle pat on his small shoulders, the kid would run after his friends again. Aiba Masaki looked around him, his fists on his hips and smiling. It was the best work he had in his whole life, and this time he wouldn’t quit it. He was pull of his thoughts as he felt a small yet firm tug on his shirt. Masaki turned around and lowed his head; he smiled seeing the little girl at his feet. He bent down at her level and asked tenderly:
“Hum? What do you want Nyako-chan?”
The little Nyako pulled a poppy from behind her back and offered it to Masaki. His smile grew wider as he smelled the nice fragrance.
“What is it for?” He asked. Nyako shook her head, a little shy, and then raised her head, smiling: “No reason. Nyako just wanted to offer something to Onii-chan.”
“Then, thank you very much!” He giggled. He patted her head and she ran towards her friends as they called her name.
Masaki stood up and sighed happily. This day care center was what he was searching for. Children were more reliable than adults, more honest and they didn’t bother with the gossips. They were like him.
Unfortunately, as always, the day was over faster than Masaki wanted. One says that you don’t see how time flies when you have fun, and it was true. Parents were coming little by little, taking their progeny in their arms and talking about the funny day they had on their way home. An elegant woman passed through the doors and bowed slightly when her eyes met Masaki’s. He bowed as well and walked toward Nyako.
“It’s time, your grandmother is here, Nyako-chan” The little girl turned her head and let fall the pile of cube she was playing with.
“Granny!” Screamed the girl, running with open arms. Masaki and the grandmother laughed softly and both bowed again.
“See you tomorrow, Onii-chan.” Nyako waved strongly, taking her grandmother’s hand in her.

“I’m home.” Called Sakurai Sho as he took off his shoes and slipped into his slippers.
“Welcome home.” Replied his mother from the kitchen. “How was your day?”
“As always.” He says, resting his shoulder against the doorframe, his arms crossed upon his chest. “The current events are really interesting but my students don’t seem to care very much. Sometimes I wonder why they choose Economics…”
Without looking at her son, she smiled a little and carried on stirring the sauce. “The majority of your students are young women, Sho…”
“Yes, and then?”
She shook softly her head: “You’re a good-looking man, and who knows, maybe the perfect girl is one of them?”
Sho sighed deeply, rolling his eyes. “Don’t say it. Please, just…don’t say it. You know what I think about that. There’s no way I would date one of my students. Moreover…I have already found the one who was made for me…” He added bitterly.
His mother closed her eyes and sighed. With a gentle voice she started: “Sho, you know about…”
“PAPA!” Nyako jumped on Sho who nearly fell because of the force. He took her in his arms and laughed genuinely.
“Hey! How is my little princess today? You had fun?” He asked, removing tenderly a lock before Nyako’s eyes.
The latter nodded. “Nyako gave a flower to Onii-chan today!”
“Oh? You gave a flower to him and there’s nothing for papa?” Asked Sho, falsely hurt and pouted.
“Nyako drew something!! Put me down, put me down!!” She gesticulated, and Sho put her down. He started to follow her, when he felt a hand on his shoulders. He turned his head to see his mother smiling sadly and as she put a hand on his cheek, he sighed again: “Mom…I don’t need love anymore…” He said, patting the soft hand.
“Sho, my dear…Without love, life is meaningless.”
“Yeah…” Said Sho without really caring, and then he left his mother and followed Nyako into her bedroom.

Most of her features came from her mother: a tiny turned-up nose, her pale and soft skin, her ears, and of course a wonderful long black hair, curling softly at the end. But she also inherit Sho’s piercing gaze. In the future, she would become a beautiful young woman; there was no doubt about it. Sho looked at the sleeping form with a look that only a father could have. Despite all the memories Nyako could bring out, he deeply and sincerely loved his daughter. Lovingly, he caressed her warm cheek with his fingertips, and then leaned his lips on her forehead, kissing it gently.

It was Sunday, and he knew he had promised her he would spend the day with her, but just as he said, sometimes adults have to break a promise. Sho couldn’t help, his work was important- not as important as Nyako, but it was his work which made them live without worries. And first of all, why did he forget that stupid report in his office? A report he had worked on for weeks now, and every day he took it with him, but of course, when the deadline was near he forgot it! Fortunately, the University wasn’t far from his house and within twenty minutes he would come back, finish it and then spend all the rest of the day with Nyako. He promised, and it wouldn’t break it this time!
Lost in his thoughts and in a rush, Sho didn’t see the jogger in front of him and both banged into one another, falling on their backs.
“Ah, I’m so sorry! Are you alright?” Asked Sho embarrassed, he stood up and offered a helping hand. The jogger shook his head, recovering from the fall, and then raised his head.
“Ah…yes. It’s me, I should loo…Eh?! Sho-chan? Sakurai Sho san? Is it you?!” Shouted happily Masaki, standing up by himself. If he didn’t recognize the face at first, that noisy voice helped Sho to remember quickly: “A…Aiba-chan?!”
Masaki nodded strongly and came nearer the other man, taking him in a strong embrace. “It’s been a while Sho-chan!! How much? Hum…something like…one, two…wow seven years already?!”
“Ai…chan…can’t…breath…” Choked Sho, trying desperately to leave the embrace. Finally the giggling young man broke the hug, moved back and scratched his nape, a bit embarrassed as he saw his friend gasping for air. In front of such a genuine old friend, Sho couldn’t help and burst in laughter. Indeed, it’s been a while since those two met. The last time was after their graduation, no, maybe even after that, but Sho couldn’t remember well.
Calming slowly, Sho coughed a little, hiding his last chuckles. “Yes, seven years…time flies, isn’t it?”
Masaki nodded, and then he passed an arm around Sho’s shoulders: “Why don’t we talk about the past in front of a drink?” Sho accepted and forgot about his work and his promise as they both entered a coffee shop.
It was the best talk he had as far as he could remember. Masaki and he used to be always together when they were younger. They weren’t in the same class-Masaki being younger, but they didn’t miss a lunch break, and during the weekend they spent their free time at each other’s house. It was great. Masaki was a special friend; always laughing and smiling, always cheerful and kind. When Sho would break up with one of his girlfriends, Masaki was right away in his room, holding him tight and saying she didn’t deserve his tears. Yes, Masaki was special. Why did they lose contact?
They spend almost three hours talking about the good old days. When Masaki asked him what was his work, Sho remembered the report, and more particularly Nyako. He stood up abruptly, excused himself for his sudden leave, and left the coffee shop after they exchanged their phone numbers and promised to meet again.
When he pushed the gates in front of his house, Sho could see Nyako sticking her nose against the window then she left her spot and ran into her room. Sho sighed looking at the plush he held in his hands.
“I think it will be harder than I thought…” He said shaking his head and walking through the little alley.
And he was right. She didn’t even give a look at the plush, too much focused on her drawing.
“Sweetie…I’m sorry” He tried for the fourth time, shaking softly her frail shoulders, expecting at least a dark look. But she only pouted and kept up drawing. Sho sighed and left the room, meeting his mother resting her back against the wall. She faintly smiled at him and patted his shoulders.
“She’s only three. A promise is important at her age.”
“I know but…why can’t she understand that sometimes I can’t keep it? I never was angry with you when you broke one.”
Her mother laughed softly. “You have a poor memory my dear. But remember Sho, when you know you can’t keep your promise, then don’t make one.” She added, walking into the living room.

They saw each other several times, and they had always a good time together, just like when they were young. As if they had never parted.
“By the way Aiba-chan, I can’t remember why we stopped seeing each others.” Asked Sho before drinking his beer.
Masaki’s smile disappeared immediately and strangely found some interest in his drink. After a short silence, he raised his head and smiled clumsily: “I… I can’t remember.” He said in a low tone. “While I think about it…are you still with…what was her name…ah right! Kunimitsu-san?”
And this time, it was Sho who lost his smile. Hearing her name was always painful, and brought back sad memories. “No.” He simply said. Sho stood up suddenly: “It’s late, I have to…It’s late.” Aiba stood up as well and grabbed Sho by the arm: “I’m sorry, did I say something wrong?” Sho shook his head and smiled faintly “No. I’m just tired. See you next time, okay?” And Masaki let him go.
He loved her, no, he still loves her. She left him and he can’t be angry at her. Her career was more important than them. She left without regret. It would be bad if somebody knew she has a child. She was still young and finally after all this time, she could debut. A top model who was also a mother…It would be bad for her career she said. And with this stupid reason she left. She took all her stuffs and left. Leaving behind her, her daughter and her father. But he can’t be angry at her, because she didn’t leave him alone; she let the most beautiful gift she could give him, even if it wasn’t her purpose.
“I love you, you know?” Said Sho, holding Nyako strongly and rocking the sleeping child in his arms. “I love you….”
*****
“What are you doing Nyako-chan?” Asked Masaki, bending over her.
“A drawing. Papa is sad today…” She simply explained.
Aiba smiled that’s why he loved children! They always did something to cheer up their parents, and they did it with all their heart. But Masaki was a little curious. Nyako-chan always talked about her father but the only one he saw was her grandmother. Of course she had parents, but he never saw her mother or her father.
“Nyako-chan…why does papa never come to take you home?”
“Papa works.” She said.
Of course, that eternal excuse! Parents who think that work is more important than their children are the worst! It was hard to make Masaki angry, but neglecting one’s children was one of the first facts on top of Aiba Masaki’s black list.
“I think, I should teach your father how one raises a child…”
