Such a loser
He didn’t like it.
Today as well, he entered his small and plain bedroom dragging his feet, walking slowly because his body hurt like hell. The bruises all over his face made him uglier- not that he was handsome, nevertheless, with all those blue and red marks he looked like Frankenstein’s creature. From the kitchen his mom asked him how was his day, and just like the day before and all the previous ones, he lied.
‘Really good! I had a lot of fun with my friends.’ Came his usual answer. The young boy tried to smile, but the bleeding cut on the corner of his lips was really painful. And without saying more he went upstairs.
While looking at his ugly and disheartening reflection in the mirror, the young boy sighed heavily and touched carefully one of the numerous bruises with his fingertips. If punches in his stomach were what one called ‘friendly pats’, if receiving stones on his face was a new way of playing baseball, and if being pushed from the pavement when a truck ran near him was a ‘friendly joke’, then yes, he had a lot of fun with his friends.
But did friends call you ‘loser’ instead of your given name? Did friends force you to eat a disgusting worm and laugh at your tears? Did friends leave you alone when you’re lying on the ground, beaten up and crying?
He didn’t think so. And he didn’t like it.
Today as well, the young boy went to sleep without eating and with tears as his only true friends. He vowed to himself that one day he would be the one who would beat them up and laugh his ass off.
*~*~*~
Leaving America for Japan seemed a good idea. But children are mean all over the world. Just because he looked Japanese, his American friends beat him up. And now, just because he came from America, his Japanese friends beat him up. There was no place for him, huh?
No place, except the bench he was sitting on. An old and lonely bench, just like he was. With all his might, he tried to not cry. He closed his fists so hard on his lap that his knuckles were white. But he was just a ten year-old boy, who felt alone, hurt and lost; and so, he took his puffy face in his hands and cried.
“Why are you crying?” Came a voice from his right. The kid didn’t move at all, the voice was from an adult, and adults always told him that he was a boy and boys didn’t cry. Adults didn’t understand him, they didn’t even try. They always told him that if he was beaten up by his friends, he should beat them up too instead of crying.
“What’s your name?” Asked the man with a gentle and concerned voice. The young boy started in surprise when a hand came to rest on his shoulders.
“Sorry, I didn’t want to scare you…Oh my!” Said the man as he saw the bruises on the kid’s face.
“What happened?” He asked in a whispered. But the kid didn’t answer him; instead he glared at the man and stood up, his fists still clenched. He knew what would happen next: he would explain that his ‘friends’ bullied him, and before he would have the time to finish his explanations, the man would tell him that he was a boy and that crying wouldn’t help him. And so, he started to leave. But a hand held his wrist hard and the young boy winced at the touch.
“Sorry…” Apologized the man, letting go of the wrist. That was at that moment he saw the kid’s face wasn’t the only part hurt. His white t-shirt was dirty, covered with dust and small blood stains. His brown shorts were in the same state, and a bit torn. One of his black shoes was missing just like one of his suspenders.
The man knelt in from of him and smiled genuinely. “Listen. You don’t have to say anything, but let’s take care of those bruises. I will let you go after that, okay?” He said gently, offering his hand.
He didn’t know why, but slowly he nodded. Something in that tall man was reassuring. He held the hand and followed the man.
*~*~*~
The tall man led him under a huge tent a bit further in the park. There were a lot of people running everywhere, holding cameras and other strange stuffs. Both of them jumped from surprise when an angry man came towards them.
“Aiba-chan, where were you?” Asked Jun, hitting Aiba’s head. “The director is mad because we couldn’t start filming without you.”
“Sorry MatsuJun.” Apologized the tall idol, wincing.
“Who’s your friend?” Asked Ohno, looking at the young boy who hid behind Aiba.
“Ah…He didn’t tell me his name but…” Started Aiba. He then pushed the young boy and showed his wounds to the rest of the group.
“What did you do to him?” Nino was the first to break the silence; the BGM coming from his DS told him he had lost a life.
“Nothing! I found him, right?” Almost cried Aiba, looking at the kid. The latter nodded slowly and squeezed hard the idol’s hand. Maybe following him wasn’t a good idea in the end. Those guys were really strange.
“He was crying, it must hurt…Where’s the first aid kit?” Added the tall idol, walking towards the table and pouring a drink of juice he then gave to the boy.
“There’s none here.” Answered Nino, closing his DS and walking towards the young kid. The gamer knelt in front of him and looked at his wounds while rubbing his chin.
“Hum…Nothing serious but…Sho-chan, could you please?” Said Nino, standing up, turning around and facing Sho.
“What?” Asked Sho, a bit embarrassed.
“You know that I know you always have medical stuff with you.”
“….this…this means nothing you know…” Grumbled Sho as he looked for his bag.
“That’s Arashi’s mother-hen for you!” Laughed Jun slightly as he put the boy on the table.
“Arashi?” Repeated the young boy, looking at Sho who knelt in front of him and started to take care of his wounds.
“Yeah. Be careful, it might hurt a little.” Warned Sho as he put a cotton pad on his knee.
“This is the name of our band.” Explained Ohno with a smile; before he looked at Sho and smiled more. “You’re very good at it!”
“Sho-chan would be the perfect bride.” Laughed Nino.
“I’m a man! And that’s exactly why I didn’t want to do it! It’s only because Aiba-chan is clumsy and he’s hurting himself…” Explained Sho, ducking his head as he tried to hide his red cheeks.
“Hey!” Exclaimed Aiba, though deep within him a warm and happy feeling made his heart beat faster.
“What’s your name?” Asked gently Jun, offering a fresh cookie the staff had made for them.
“…o…er…” Whispered the young boy as he took the cookie with a trembling hand.
“I’m sorry, what?” Said Ohno kneeling in front of the boy.
“Loser…that’s how my friends call me.”
The five men rise up their heads at the same time and a heavy silence filled the tent. They looked at each other and didn’t know how to break the silence.
“Filming will start in five minutes! Everyone please come outside!” An AD called from the other side of the tent.
“I’m sorry we have to go work…” Sho apologized as he put the last band aid on the boy’s knee.
“Could you wait a little here? After we’re finished we will take you to your home.” Offered Aiba with a gentle smile.
The boy didn’t reply anything and a few minutes later Arashi left the tent. Jun stopped and turned around looking at the boy.
“There’s some manga on the corner of the table…you can read them while you’re waiting for us.” He offered before following the others.
The kid stay alone and silent inside the tent. He started to walk and looked at the different stuffs the men left around: some magazines about fishing and wild animals, a lot of newspapers and a note book with plenty of notes on it, a strange small box that seems like those GameBoys the boy had noticed in the Toys shops. On the other corner of the room, there were a lot of books just like the man with curly hair had told him. Finally he noticed something inside one of the bags… the boy looked around him if nobody would come and he opened the bag. There was a stuffed dog inside…Japanese grown men take their stuffed animal with them?! Those guys were really strange!
“You! Who are you and what are you doing here?!” Scolded a voice from the other side of the tent.
“I..I…”
“Get out of here! It’s a private place; you don’t have the right to be here! Get out or I’ll call the cops!” Said the angry man walking towards him in a menacing way.
The boy avoided the firm grip and ran out from the tent, scared. He ran as fast as he could, the wounds all over his body hurt him with every step. As he turned his head to look behind him, he didn’t notice that he was in front of a camera until the director yelled angrily.
“Who’s that boy?! I didn’t ask for a boy to come here! That’s not in the script! Take him away!”
As two tall guys wearing black clothes came towards him, five men stood in front of him and bowed respectfully.
“We’re really sorry!” Said Sho.
“He’s one of our friends and we asked him to stay inside the tent.” Added Jun.
“Please forgive us. It will not happen again!” They said in unison and bowed again.
The director seemed a bit embarrassed to have the five idols apologizing, and with a grunt he mumbled that the natural light wasn’t good anymore and that the filming was over for today. The five of them walked towards the tent to pick up their stuff before their manager came to pick themselves.
“Where do you live?” Asked Jun, putting his books inside his bag.
“No to far…I’ll go back by myself. I’m sorry for the problems I caused. Thank you for your help.” Said the boy. He bowed and came out from the tent, until Ohno put a hand on his shoulders.
“Hey! There’s no problem at all. Most of the time it’s Aiba-chan who makes trouble so there’s no need to apologize.” Said the leader with a genuine smile.
“Hey!” Came Aiba’s voice from the corner of the tent.
“So? Where do you live?” Asked Sho again, putting his bag on his shoulders and heading to the exit.
Why did these guys wanted to know where he lived so much? His mother had warned him about strange people and more particularly about adults. Maybe they were killers? Or worse! Pedophiles? After all they had that young-looking boy who always played with his GameBoy, maybe he’s their prisoner?
“I…I’ll be fine by myself. Thanks anyway.”
The boy came out from the tent and left quickly as Arachi watched him. They didn’t even know his name and he seemed so lonely, they felt a bit useless.
*~*~*~
After an hour he finally reached his house, but only to find the door closed. Of course! How did he forget? His mother went back to the USA for wrapping some stuff up! He dug his hand inside his back pocket, then the other, then the front ones and started to panic when he couldn’t find the spare keys she gave him before she left.
“Great!” He sighed as he slid against the door. Maybe he had lost it when his ‘friends’ ‘played’ with him earlier. By the time he would reach the park again it would be too black to search for the keys and he was getting hungry. Maybe the night would be nice and not too cold tonight?
But almost after he thought that, the rain started to fall and the tiny dry place in front of the door wasn’t enough for him. Why? Why all the bad things seemed to follow him? What has he done? He wasn’t a bad kid; he loved his mother and always wanted to help her. He never has done anything wrong, so why?!
“Bullying isn’t a pleasant thing, right?” Came a voice near him.
The kid lifted his head and noticed that the rain didn’t fall on him anymore. It was one of those guys! The one who seemed 17 years old and he was caring with him a blue umbrella.
“Why don’t you come inside the car? It will be better and also…don’t say I told you but Aiba-chan’s worried about you.” Said Nino with a soft smile and nodding towards a small black van in front of them. The window went down and let appeared a smiling Aiba.
The kid stood up suddenly and pushed Nino.
“You pedo! Leave me alone! I’m not interested in this kind of things!”
“P…pedo?!” Repeated Nino shocked, before smiling again and kneeling in front of the kid.
“Look…You’re kinda cute but I’m sorry I’m not interested in…” He started to say until he heard a funny noise coming from the kid’s stomach.
“You know what? Don’t mind! You’re a big boy and I’m sure you can be fine by yourself. We just wanted to tell you that we’ll stay in this restaurant right over there…” Said Nino while pointing at the said restaurant on the other side of the road.
“Just wanted to tell you...” He said with a smirk when he noticed the worried look on the kid’s face.
Nino gave him his umbrella and walked towards the car again. “Let’s go guys! I’m hungry and I want a warm cup of sweet chocolate!”
“But Nino you don’t like sw….ouch!” Yelled Aiba before being pushed by Nino.
The boy watched intently the car and just like the guy said, they entered the restaurant…It was a public place and if they tried to do something weird he could ask for help…He was so hungry and so cold that even being inside the restaurant for a minute would be great.
