Jin sits down, partly because he's exhausted, but mostly because he doesn't know what to do next. It was stupid to assume Kame would be here, anyway, he thinks. It's not like he's the hero of some kind of fairy tale, destined to save his proverbial princess from evil monsters. Then, though, he remembers the tone of Kame's voice, somehow clear through the noise of the phone, how he had called Jin to help him, not anyone else.

"Akanishi Jin does not give up that easily," he says, standing up. He looks around, hoping no one was around to hear him talking to himself, and the red gate of the temple flashes across his vision. It seems like the next logical place to go.

Across the bridge, just before a grove of trees that split to leave a path towards the temple, stands a sign. Temple to Benzaiten, it reads. Rumored to have cast a spell in Inokashira Park, dooming the love affairs of couples who venture here.

He has searched every potted plant and bowl of incense he's encountered for clues, and still he has nothing. His memories of their lunch in the park seem fuzzier than they did earlier, and Jin feels like he's trying to hold onto a memory of a dream ( ... )

Jin stares at the phone screen, hoping desperately that the text will rearrange itself before his eyes into something that makes sense--that maybe this entire day will rearrange itself into something that makes sense--but this approach proves unsurprisingly unsuccessful. The word "boat" remains just that, his phone doesn't buzz with any incoming follow-up texts, and Jin is still lying confused in the gravel at Inokashira Park ( ... )

Jin hasn't had much contact with the supernatural before this, but he figures, maybe he should just get in the dumb boat.

Oh, sure, in horror movies people always end up dying horrible deaths because they follow the advice of weird beings that can make the time on one's cell phone spell out death, but he also knows that the people who don't follow the advice end up dying too, so really, he might as well just take action.

Besides, Jin doesn't like sitting around and doing nothing and this boat thing is really the only idea he has left ( ... )

If he’d been in the boat with Jin and it had not started to sink that is. Because it’s the exact same expression that Pi wore at lunch an indistinct number of years ago when Jin told him he didn’t like it the way Kame was growing up. “He needs to stop that,” Jin had said solemnly. “You need to stop being a retard,” Pi had quipped on a mildly Ryo-inspired whim and reached for his third taco bread of the day. But Jin is pretty sure Pi has never tried rowing before. Jin can’t say he’s given it much thought prior to this. Like it was a basic enough task to manage without too much effort. At least it seemed that way until Jin realizes he’s rowing in vaguely serpentine like patterns and that he’s managed to transport himself an impressive number of 10 meters from the shore in the last five minutes. Which would also be the same amount of time it apparently takes for his hands to start to blister. And this is when Pi ( ... )
