“Burning Bridges”

You and I were meant to be
Ain’t no doubt about it
No way to hide that sort of thing
Now I’m waiting for something better
Ain’t nothing better worth imagining

I, I keep on running
I’m building bridges that I know you never wanted
Look for my heart
You stole it away
Now on every single road that I could take
Listen, I want you to burn my bridges down
I said, I want you to burn my bridges down
Set me on fire
You set me
Set me on fire
You can burn my bridges down

Chapter #1

Luke was exhausted the past three weeks had been a whirlwind vacation with his best friend Casey Hughes.  They had booked a three-week European Vacation with a tour company for ages 19-30 years old.  Luke was hesitant as always and Casey had been so excited.  It was a great trip seeing Paris, Rome, Munich, Vienna, Lucerne and many other small towns on their journey.  Luke enjoyed the scenery, the history and meeting people from Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.  He and Casey were, the only American’s, I guess going to Europe in late January and early February was not a popular destintaion.  Unfortunately with Luke’s new job he couldn’t leave at a moment’s notice and Casey had just finished articling for a law firm in Chicago and was taking some time off before starting a spring and summer session of classes before writing his bar exam in the fall.

The good thing for Luke was that he was able to attend a conference in Amsterdam at the end of his tour and then meet up with Casey again in London before Casey returned to the US.  Luke would be spending another week at the company’s head office in London Luke was a junior assistant in the communications and PR department.  It had been a long time coming but Luke had finally been able to complete his degree in creative writing with a minor in business administration.  The work with The Centaur Group was new and exciting, he had been with the company for a year in the Chicago office but they had a large office in London and New York as well as smaller offices throughout the world.

When Luke’s manager Elliot heard that Luke was coming to Europe he arranged for him to attend the conference in Amsterdam and then spend the following week at the office in London.  Luke was so excited to have the opportunity to learn more about the company and spend time at the head office.   Luke had also applied for an internship in the New York office and was hoping to find out if he’d been chosen for a position in the writing department that wrote advertising material to promote not only The Centaur Group but some of their clients as well.

“Yo, dude, are you with me?” Casey asked watching the familiar glazed look in Luke’s eyes when he was somewhere else.

“Oh, sorry Case, I was just thinking about how I got here,” Luke apologized and gazed back out the door of the hotel they had stayed at the night before.

Casey shrugged and replied, “Hey, man relax, I know you didn’t find anyone to hook up with on this trip but I hope you still had fun.”

“Yeah, I know I didn’t but I think it was for the best, with all the drama from Noah the past decade I really needed a break from anyone, “ Luke smiled tightly and then added, “But I did have a great time hanging out with you on this trip it was awesome,” and Luke meant it, he wasn’t sure when he and Casey would have an opportunity like this again as their lives changed and they each followed different career paths.

Casey nodded thinking to himself; “Thank god Luke finally cut himself loose from Noah.”

The man had been such a drain on Luke for almost seven years, the whole push and pull was enough to make you sick.  They finally called it quits almost two years ago and when Luke accepted the position at The Centaur Group just over a year ago and moved to Chicago Noah had finally stopped badgering Luke.  Noah had wanted Luke to come to L.A. and be his screenwriter but Luke had refused.  Noah kept blaming Luke for his failures in L.A. and Luke finally, finally had had enough.

“Alright dude, I need to get back to the bus.  Are you ready for your conference?  Do you know where you’re going?” Casey asked, suddenly feeling nervous to leave Luke alone in Amsterdam.

Luke laughed, “Casey I’m twenty-five years old I think I can manage,” Luke turned to give Casey a hug of reassurance.

Casey returned the hug and clapped Luke on the back, “Take care and I’ll see you Sunday night.”

“See you Sunday Case,” Luke replied grabbing his suitcase and backpack heading towards a cab.

“Amsterdam, Hilton please,” Luke instructed the driver.

“Certainly,” the man replied in a thick accent that sounded middle-eastern.

Luke sank back into the cab and breathed a sigh of relief.  The trip had been fun but although Luke would never admit it he missed the comforts that a trust fund brat had become accustom to.  Luke had access to a private jet from his grandmother or father, but at the moment he wasn’t speaking with Damian, again.  Anyway, Holden Snyder was the dad he really respected Damian Grimaldi was just the sperm donor.   Holden had always been supportive of Luke and Damian the opposite.

Damian wanted Luke to follow in the Grimaldi shipping business and Luke wanted to be on his own to travel his own path not one that had been chosen for him.  When Luke, joined The Centaur Group he and Damian had another grueling argument and they had not spoken for almost a year.  Luke still had the foundation that he’d set up after Damian had given him money five years ago but his grandmother Lucinda Walsh had people running the day to day.  Luke still spent time overseeing and making the final decisions on the proposals as they came in.

Luke tipped the driver as he left the cab and walked into the hotel, he was still dressed in his jeans and dark sweater with a short brown leather jacket overtop.  Although it was February it was not that cold in Amsterdam.  As he walked into the lobby he sensed rather than saw someone watching him.  He turned from the counter after giving the girl at the front desk his name and the name of the conference and looked into a pair of translucent blue eyes and a handsome face framed by auburn curls.  The eyes were assessing and Luke could feel a flush spread across his skin as a smirk cross the man’s delicate lips and an auburn eyebrow arched up in response.

“Excuse me sir?” the girl spoke and Luke turned back to her, “You’re in room 605, Mr. Snyder and the conference attendees will be having a meet and greet at 7 pm this evening in in the Garden Salon.”

Luke smiled and apologized for being distracted, “Oh, I’m sorry, thank you for your help miss.”

As he grabbed his bags and headed to the elevator he watched the auburn haired man leave the lobby, Luke admired the movement of his ass in tight black jeans that could be seen just below a hip length black leather jacket.

“Wow,” Luke thought, “He’s hot.”

Luke enjoyed the hot pulsing shower after the past three weeks in hotels much like hostels he appreciated the luxuries of a five star hotel.  After his shower Luke ordered up a BLT and fries since he hadn’t had anything as simple as it in days.  He made a few calls home and checked in with everyone after he’d eaten.  When he lay down he figured he would have a short nap and then head down to the meet and greet.

At 8 pm Luke opened his eyes, “Shit!” he cursed and got-up running a hand through his unruly blonde hair.  The natural blonde highlights glinted in the light from the bathroom, “I don’t have time for another shower.  I’ll just have to straighten out this mess of hair and get dressed,” Luke said aloud as he grimaced at his reflection, his hair mussed giving him that sexy just tumbled out of bed look.
