I actually disagree with that. The No Child Left Behind Act was only brought into effect in 2002, which doesn't explain why adult Americans have no idea of world geography.
Questionable-to-shitty education plays a role, but I think it mostly has to do with a lack of enthusiasm (and lack of encouragement for that enthusiasm) for the world outside US borders. Come on- kids can memorize all the US states but not where Europe is?
