A few writing-related questions

I don't drink very much, so when it comes to getting a character drunk/tipsy, sometimes I get lost. I tend to just have one or two girl drinks (depending on how strong they are) and delight in being tipsy; I've never been drunk in my life. (I've done shots before too, but never very many.) Somebody who likes rum would probably like rum & lime, but IMO jello shots should only be made with vodka. LOL This man is likely to need quite a bit of alcohol to get tipsy, especially if he's eating as well. I would just go non-specific and say that he had a bunch of beer.

I can do vodka. I actually did research, LOL, and the sites were like JUST USE ALCOHOL. :D But I can see how a clear liquor would be preferable. Any particular brand you recommend? :D

What if he's not eating and had dinner about 4 hours before? I don't really have time for tons of beer, and I can't see this guy ever being enough of a drinker to be like WOOOOO, MORE BEER! (It's not Dean. XD) I would think two beers, tops. How affected would he be if he had two? (If you have any idea/impression of that.)

If he hadn't eaten in several hours and had a couple of jello shots and drank a couple of beers quickly, yeah that would work. And for jello shots the brand should be cheap. Around here, I'd say Burnette's or Gordon's, generic stuff. Mixing high end vodka with jello would be kind of sad. ;)

Good good, I can work with this. I don't need him drunk, just a little loose. Thank you for the impressions, they will help.

Rum and lime jell-o sounds good. :)

Yay for writer talk. I'm glad you had a great time talking about that with your friend!

I may switch to vodka, but I also liked the fact that they were "lime and rummies." :D Oh, the decisions we must make as writers...

Talking about writing is my crack. @_@

You can be pretty vague in your description. Yes, it depends on bodymass and gender how much you can take without problem but it's still not that easy to say. I know a guy who is 6'3" (?) who gets drunk after two beers and I'm 5'6" and can drink 5 Tequilas without getting drunk (I drink 3-4 times a year, I'm a special occasion drinker).

And it was already mentioned, jello shots are normally done with Vodka.

Okay, thanks for the input! I'm wangling it into two beers and two shots to loosen him up. A lot of fun dialogue came to me to help it happen. :)

Actually, I don't think there is anything that makes "common sense" when it comes to alcohol. If that guy is used to alcohol, well, he probably would need a lot more than 1 or 2 bottles, but if he's not even that can be enough to get him tipsy. I can't really give you a straight answer to that. Sure, it also has something to do with weight and body size, but I think it is more a thing of how often you drink and how much you can "tolerate"... personally, I can't tolerate much of wine. Give me one glass and I'm already tipsy, but Beer... well, I can drink a bottle and only start to feel tipsy. It's completely different. And I'm not used to alcohol at all, so usually it doesn't take all that much for me to get drunk...

So glad you had a nice time with Melissa :D

I don't drink often, but I know there have been times I've done shots and it seemed like I had to do a bunch to start feeling something (of course, they're small, but still, they're strong). But once I had this glass of wine at a restaurant which was described as "dessert wine" and it tasted pretty good, and after just that one glass I was tipsyyyyy. I remember everything but the world was shiny and wonderful. :D Is wine supposed to be really strong or something? I want more of that particular type of wine! And of course, there's Everclear... definitely felt something pretty quick drinking any of that.

Anyway, yes, your input makes a lot of sense!

Definitely vodka with jello for shots. My best friend is 6'3 and a is a good average muscular build, when we have drinks he can easily have around 4-5 beers over a few hours before he even begins to get that slightly tipsy shine in his eyes. If we're drinking spirits, same thing - say over three hours if he drinks 5 G&Ts he'll be shiny happy but not drunk. When we've both gotten drunk together he has, on average, had twice as much as me so I would put that at about 8 or so drinks over maybe 3-4 hours, to get him rolling drunk would take quite a lot. It also depends how often a person drinks, if you have someone that rarely touches alcohol they will get drunk relatively fast, my friend probably has a few beers a couple of times a week. Hope that helps.

Thank you! That definitely helps. I wouldn't peg this character for a frequent drinker, and he'd definitely be a lightweight compared to Dean (who is also in the story). But since he's tall and not on the scrawny side, I'm getting more alcohol into him before he seems tipsy. :D
