There's lots of good artificial sweeteners on the market. I think Crystal Light is made with Nutrasweet, which I don't have a problem with, but you may want to try the Splenda or Equal instead. You can still use regular Kool Aid packs, only use the substitute instead of sugar. And, hey, they make some VERY good sugar free chocolate now, which helps with the sweet tooth! Yeah, foods high in fat can really jack up your sugar, and so can processed white flour products. I find I do a lot of grilling of meats now, and eat a lot more fresh fruit and vegetables. I recommend listening to your doctor about the sugar, though. Mine was uncontrolled for a long time, and just look at all the problems I've had because of it! And, YAY for free medicine!
Nutrasweet, yeah! That's the stuff that gives me headaches. I never thought of trying the other artificial sweeteners and making Kool-Aid with them. I'm trying the sugar-free drink mix now and it's very diety, with the diet aftertaste, bleh. I may just get me some Splenda or something and see how that tastes. I miss my Kool-Aid already. :P But I know it's important to work on this.
There's a whole bunch on the market now. Splenda is kind of pricey, so if you can get the store brand it's cheaper. But it works better for cooking and baking than the other stuff does, it doesn't lose the sweetness in the baking. There's also sorbitol sweeteners, but they give some people diarrhea. There's another one, I think it's called xylitol, but would have to llok it up to be sure. Sugar Twin generally sucks, and so does anything in a pink packet (saccharine - has that nasty aftertaste). There's usually a measurement chart on the box that tells you about how many packets to use to equal the sweetness of one cup of sugar.
