For Christ's sake. It's just one of those evenings where I can feel alienation all around me. I remember learning about the different kinds of alienation in ISS, and of course understanding them, but really I've never had to deal with certain types of alienation till moving here. Definitely just a re-adjusting thing. I don't think you could ever lose your ability to joke around and make people laugh. Although I haven't had the experience of getting a real job out of college and moving away, I think I would pretty much be experiencing the same feelings you are. I tend to get shy and awkward when I am in a situation that I feel like I can't control or that I'm not used to.
Hang in there! I know you are great at making people feel comfortable and relaxed because you are so personable and friendly. Give it time; Chicago is a big city! Make the city of Chicago adjust to your specifications and not the other way around ;)
