Ali's stretched out on her stomach on a blanket, an arm draped over her little son Alured. Alured is busily exploring the joys of having a rattle, and from time to time decides to interrupt Ali's reading by banging it against her books. When that doesn't work, he decides to hit her in the chin, at which point she closes her books and switches his rattle to his other hand.

Alured's soon absorbed with his "new toy", leaving Ali time to ask a question. "Grandparents. How do you deal with them? Specifically, how do I get mine to understand I'm not moving to thousands of miles to a new country because they miss me, without their trying to make me feel guilty? They're remarkably good at that. Do grandparents have some sort of superpower that lets them do that? And is it wrong of me to use Alured to distract them when I don't want to answer their questions?"

((Off and on now, but never fear: I shall reply!))
