Chapter 4
3018 December

During the time of preparing for the journey, Aragorn and Legolas tried to spend as much time together with Tithdareon.

The thought had been for the whole Mirkwood delegation to return as soon as possible to their own realm, but as Legolas had offered his bow to Frodo and would not have stood back to have Aragorn to leave him, they had send only half back with messages from the Prince's. Legolas did know that Thranduil wouldn't blame their decision, he probably would be relived how things had went.

When Tithdareon learned what his parents had done, he had been sulking for two days when he was told he would under no circumstances come with them. He had tried to get his ada to change his mind, but had known that promises would not be broken. So when he accepted that he would be going back with the rest of the Mirkwood delegation the day after his parents left he spend the remaining time with them.

Aragorn was shown how good Tithdareon was with his bow and he sure was in the same class as Legolas. There was a competition with the twins, and to Aragorn's half brothers disappointment, they lost their bet.

Among the few things Aragorn was able to teach his son was how to wield a sword. He then saw how easy Tithdareon had to learn things, when he was determined to do so.

Two days after the council had taken place, Aragorn finally got a moment alone with his foster father. He had a difficult time to decide how he would put everything, but in the end it was not that hard. What Aragorn was most worried about was how Elrond would take the decision he had proposed to Legolas. Elrond took the news calmly, maybe somewhat relieved now that he wouldn't loose Arwen. What's more he was surprised to learned that a deep bond developed between Aragorn and Legolas and that it happened when Aragorn was still in his youth. Tithdareon was the proof of what the fates had given them, when Legolas had been the one who carried him. Elrond had congratulated him and gave his blessing. He wouldn't opposite their marriage. Aragorn breathed out a sigh of relief as he understood.

The months went away all too quick for everyone and soon they had to depart.

The evening before, Aragorn had gone to his mother's grave to get some strength for what was to come. He asked himself if he done the right thing. He still doubted himself for what Elrond and Gandalf told him who he was. Visiting the place made him feel better.

On the way back to the house he was stopped by Arwen. She said that she was happy for him, for the choice he had made and that she believed him to have done the right thing.

"You will be happier with Legolas than you would have been with me. To be whole in the body and spirit makes you so much stronger. You will survive and you will get a long life together with your family."

She leaned forward kissed him on the forehead.

"You shall not worry about me. I have found someone else to love." She continued before Aragorn could say anything. "I want you to carry this." Arwen handed him a piece of her jewellery to him.

"No, you can not give that to me." Aragorn objected.

"It is mine to give to whom I believe would need it the best. The world's destiny lies in your hands and what I give you is the hope you would need when you stand in front of the darkness you will meet. I know it is a part of me and one part of my heart will always belong to you."

Aragorn closed his hand around the Evenstar, touched by her words and he held a little part of his heart for her.

"I will treasure it well and when this is over I will give it back to you. Uir le vellon nîn!" [Forever you are my friend]

"May all the fortune be with you." Arwen said and then disappeared as fast as she had come.

Aragon stood standing there for a moment. He had been worried how she would take the news that had been revealed about his decision of who he really loved. Her speech told him what heritage she had.

"You look sad. Did you not find any peace at your mother's grave?" Legolas asked when he was back.

"Yes, I found some there also from Arwen, though my sadness is of course from that we have to part from Tithdareon. I do wish he could come with us, but then I know the importance of having him in Mirkwood and that we will wait to make the final bound between us. Everything to save the heritage if anything would befall us." Aragorn replied and went to sit down on the bed.

"It is hurting me as well. There has never been a time I would have been parted from his in the same distance as this will be."

Aragorn took hold of Legolas hand. "I know it is not the same, as it has to be parted with me, but now we have each other, knowing we love each other."

"Yes, we have."

"By the way where is our fearless son?" Aragorn asked and looked around.

"Are you talking about me again?" Tithdareon countered and stepped in through the opening of the balcony.

"You very well heard us." Legolas said. "Come here we want to spend the last hours together with you."

He came and joined his parents on the bed.

"Please promise me you will come home." Tithdareon said with all of a child's fear in his voice.

"Pen neth, we will do everything we can to come home, but we have no clue of what we will be up against. If we are not successful in our endeavours, you shall know that you have Thranduil, Elrond and all of our friends to care for you." Legolas tried to insure him.

"No matter what happens you know that we love you and always will do. We will be with you in your heart. Never forget that." Aragorn said and then felt how a tear ran down. He didn't bother to dry it of. It was hard to lose a parent, both of them know. He hugged him close and was joined by Legolas.

It didn't matter that Tithdareon was grown up, all stayed in the same bed and slept in each other's embrace all through the night.
