Theatre and Film

I saw STC's production of A Streetcar Named Desire on the weekend, and I really wanted to gush about how brilliant it was, but it wasn't. It was very good, but it wasn't completely AMAZING. Possibly I expected too much. It's probable that the fault is all mine -- somewhere in the second act I realised that I just didn't care too much what happened ( Read more... )

It’s ridiculous how refreshing it felt to see a movie involving women being awesome and kicking butt without resorting to stupid stereotypes.

I know that feeling well - first the squee, then the 'wait a minute, why the hell is this squee not a more routine thing?'... I'll have to look out for that film.

Also, I gazed upon Julian Sands last night. Admittedly he was covered in supernatural goop because he was in Warlock: the Armageddon, but it was something. Had discussion about how he always seems wooden in these daft horror/fantasy/SF things because he can never quite give himself over to them, whereas someone like Malcolm McDowell or Rutger Hauer just goes for it with glorious abandon and lifts them by doing so.

He's still pretty, though. And I found a DVD of A Room with a View, so...

Oh, Julian. The man doesn't age. It's uncanny. Perhaps he really is a vampire.

I have vague memories of Roller Derby being on every Saturday afternoon when I was a kid. My older sisters and brother watched it. It was kind of a thing back then.

I'd like to see the movie, but will wait for the DVD or when it comes on HBO or whatever.

It is good to hear that it's a grrrl movie, but with that cast was kind of expecting it.

Joel Edgerton was rilly good. You get to see his naked butt briefly!

Of course I will go. I don't think STC tends to tour shows nationally much, so you'll just have to visit me again. Or wait until it makes Harvest Rain's endless rotation. ;)

Gah! I cannot choose between the Aussie Streetcar and the West End one that my friend saw with Rachel Weisz... not that I'm going to get to see either but it's nice to ponder such sexy productions. I've been a bit in love with Joel Edgerton since The Secret Life Of Us ;)

When I saw Othello with Chiwetel Ejorfor and Ewan McGregor the audience (me too) was laughing at a lot of dark lines. A friend was adament that the darkness was funny, but I'm inclined to believe that it was because Ewan McGregor was being evil. Don't get me wrong, I think that he did a great job- chilling, intelligent, ruthless- but it's because it was Ewan.

Oooh, Rachel Weisz would have been really interesting. My mother was really interested to hear if Cate had dyed her hair or wear a wig, because my mother always pictures Blanche as dark-haired, possibly because of Vivien Leigh. But I, without that association, figured of course Blanche would be blonde! As I said to someone else up there, you do briefly get to see Joel Edgerton's naked butt (it's very white) in a tiny scene framing the aftermath of the rape, which I thought could also have been handled better. But I'm digressing! Othello sounds marvellous, although I too would have felt that way about Ewan, and also about Iago in general -- the only stage version I've seen had this ridiculous lighting effect where whenver Iago was having a Soliloquoy of Evil, the stage was black except for a spotlight right on his face, so you had no doubt whatsoever that he was Evil. It was hilarious.
