Personally, I loved ER. It's a bit procedural, but I have a weakness for medical dramas. And you'll have to get in line for Alex Kingston. I just found out she's in Doctor Who, and I'm sorely tempted to watch it based on that alone. :D
Well, as my entire family is in medicine, it will probably feel an awful lot like dinner conversation. :P But that means I'll also probably understand it.

(Seriously, though, watch Doctor Who. She's not in the first three seasons, but the show is so good that it's totally worth it. And once she shows up? Decadent icing on the already fabulous cake.)
Alex Kingston was darling on ER, though played a very different part from what I know of Doctor Who. But if you watched it for her, you would definitely not be let down in terms of screen time and substantial stories. It's an ensemble show with lots of other characters, but she's not ER's Gaeta.
Though clearly, the true reason you need to watch ER is because it would enable you to read my ER fic. Which, amongst others, is about a character played by Parminder Nagra, who I can promise you'd adore.
I love the everloving hell out of Alex Kingston. I don't even care what kind of role she has- I've seen interviews with her and I think she's precious. I've seen some pictures of her from ER, and I just want to see her being all Doctory and hot.
