Heh. I was trying to explain to someone why I liked Charlie the Unicorn and The Pretender and they got kinda bzzzzzzzt brain has ejected from this conversation with me. I think you'd like The Pretender. I really do. :)
Anyway, yeah, um... I think any kind of surrealist horror/rape could have sparked Matsushita's inspiration for YnM. :)
In Heaven, everything is fine... you've got your good things, and I've... got... mine...saerwen_13August 9 2009, 02:32:42 UTC
He's been compared to Dracula. Don't make my tendency to compare and contrast everything I watch with everything else I watch seem as OCD as it is. B(
Eraserhead is your every worst nightmare, but with extra... babies. Do me a favor, look up the Eraserhead baby and the chickens, then videotape your reaction. I'm sure it'd be lolarious. (Or guilt-inducing, because Eraserhead actually is pretty traumatic.)
I don't think I've ever heard anything about Coppola's Dracula and YnM, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if a lot of the inspiration for it was taken from the imagery in the movie.
There are actually a lot of interesting allusions to classic literature and mythology in Japanese Manga (which is incredibly fascinating, I think, but I'm a total nerd for such things XD). Have you ever read Angel Sanctuary? It's a bit convoluted and headache inducing at moments, but the art and imagery are gorgeous and there's a lot of interesting use of Christian Mythology, and I think you might enjoy it since you like YnM. :D
Oooh, and have you seen Pan's Labyrinth? The story is lovely and the imagery is amazing. *_*
Same here, on both counts. It makes my dorky heart soar when I do, though. ♥
Well, it starts off following this boy, Setsuna, who's in love with his sister (... oh, incest. Always with the incest.), who you find out is actually the human reincarnation of the Archangel Alexiel. It turns out that Alexiel rebelled against god because she disagreed with the way the other angels were behaving. As punishment, her soul was separated from her body and she's been forced to live out a series of mortal lives (all of which are pretty miserable and tragic) on earth. Meanwhile, Alexiel's brother, Rosiel, has been searching for her soul since it was separated from her body, and has become quite batshit in the process. He finally manages to track her down as Setsuna and crazy things happen. That's a really bad synopsis, but there are a lot of really awesome characters (although the plot does get a bit convoluted). The story is basically a new take on Catholic Dogma. Most of the characters are either angels/demons (and it even has characters from

...god I hate 90's+ movies. I...guess I see the resemblance, both only in the sense of the ACTUAL STORY "DRACULA." Lucy becomes a vampire, starts luring out children, Mina and her husband, still humans, still virtuous, hunt down Dracy with help of Van Helsing and kill the bastard.
God, I HATE NINETIES MOVIES. THEY COMPLETELY FUCKED OVER, SCREWED, RAPED, MAULED, OBLITERATED AND OTHER ADJECTIVES I CAN'T THINK OF CAUSE I'M TIRED AND FURIOUS CLASSICAL LITERATURE.
}D Yeah, sorry about that tangent. I think I was PO'd at the world. o.o But then again, I refuse to see the 80's er...Iono, but it'sed based off a 30's movie, that is based off Kafka's "The Metamorphosis"on the sole reason of 80's movies are good for slasher flicks and nothing else.
Well, there's this one literary reading of "Dracula" I always loved, namely that Dracula is getting at the men (read: sucking their blood which always equals the sexual act) through the women. Lucy was courted by all three guys (obviously they took turns *g*), while Mina is married to Harker. He actually is more interested in the men and the two women are just a means to an end. But since homosexuality is a taboo he has to take the long way round.
It should probably noted that Bram Stoker appeared to be quite prudish. In his opinion, the book wasn't about sex at all. But even back then, in the late 1900s, the novel got a yellow cover. I read somewhere that was to indicate erotic literature:)
