This post became a post about books, somewhere along the line.

First day of my long Memorial Day weekend, and I was up- and wide awake- at 6:00 a.m. I'm not sure why, except I think I may have heard my next-door neighbor's alarm through the walls of our apartments. This is not an impossible theory, although I've never heard his alarm before; I do know I have heard him snoring in the past. (The joys of having bedrooms in close proximity.) At any rate, I was totally awake the instant I opened my eyes, so I got up. Plans for today are to drive into Easton to try a coffee shop that I've been meaning to go to since I moved down here last year, and then go to the Farmer's Market and come back to Cambridge for a haircut. Pictures may follow, but perhaps not for a few days; I spent two hours outdoors in the very middle of the day helping out with the senior class picnic yesterday, and my neck and arms are now stained a nice shade of rose. The hair will essentially be the same as it is now, except shorter.

Maybe I should also go to the grocery store today. I'm running pretty low on food.

Happily, my holiday weekend includes opportunities to see gingerrose (Florence), metamorphage (Noah), and dancingbard (Gen)! I'm driving down tomorrow night to stay at Florence's house in Westminster overnight, and then heading to Laurel for Gen's family's graduation party. (Of the four kids in the family, 3 are graduating from secondary or higher education this year.) I have to come back the same evening, though, because there's work in the morning; the first of my last two weeks of work for the year. (WOW.)

Plans for the England Trip of Epicness and Awesomeness (which is now just under three weeks away) are well underway and mostly complete. More important than things like choosing a hostel, though, I've chosen the books I'm bringing with me for the trip. :) They are as follows:

- Winter's Bone by Daniel Woodrell
- Maya by Jostein Gaarder
- A Taxonomy of Barnacles by Galt Niederhoffer
- American Gods by Neil Gaiman

4 might seem like a lot of books to bring on vacation, especially considering that I went on a similar-length trip to the same country three years ago and only brought one book (The Golden Compass, in case you were wondering). But I'm going to have a lot more transient time on this trip than the last one. I have the six-hour flight both ways, plus a good amount of train travel when we start to make our way to Scotland for Gen's graduation, and a five-hour layover in the undesirable spot of Newark, New Jersey on the way home. Keep in mind, also, that the last time I went to England I was on a study tour; as such, I spent a good chunk of time studying. Won't have to do that this time! Anyway, it's the first time reading all of these books for me, although I have seen- and loved- the film of "Winter's Bone." I'm amused that Neil Gaiman will be touring around America for the 10th anniversary edition of American Gods, at the same time as I am reading it for the first time in his native England. :P

There was going to be a bit more to this post, but I think I'd better head down to Easton now if I want to be done with everything in time for my hair appointment. One more thing, though: if any of you would like a postcard from my trip, leave your address in the comments! I may not send it until I get back if postage costs are killer, but I'll definitely fill it out while I am there. :) Comments on this entry are screened for your privacy; I'll unscreen any that don't have personal information in them.
