    "Support Our Troops" yellow ribbons are everywhere. Businesses seem to be making a point of showing potential customers they're as nationalistic as can be while drivers share their patriotism with each other in bumper-sticker form. These ribbons carry a message no one could disagree with. We support the life and livelihood of fellow Canadians ( Read more... )

Yep. Exactly the same thing is going on down here, except it tends to get nastier (this being the U.S.). I don't want to generalise, but often the conservative reaction to someone's opposition to Iraq will be along the lines of: 'well, obviously you don't support the troops, so obviously you aren't as American as I am, so obviously I'm the one here who has the right idea'. It's basically a variation on the reaction best summarised by satire (although I've forgotten the source): "You don't agree with me? Well, FLAG FLAG FLAG FLAG FLAG!"

I think you probably see a lot more of those ribbons in Fredericton due to the nearby presence of Gagetown than we do here in Toronto. That said there has been some local controversy over the placement of those ribbons on police cars and fire trucks.
