Oh, honey! Broken and beautiful! There's no question that Sam would damn his own soul to get Dean back--and I love the way you've expressed that here. And the imagery, I love the red imagery of memories dripping away like blood. Lovely!

You can thank the band Cradle of Filth for the memory-imagery. Despite some of their lyrics, there are bits and pieces that stick in one's mind and affect it...

This assaulted me one day with that final line. Then it drew up a company and refused to let me explain things better.

Dreamlittleyo read this as Sam had damned himself, but I'm seeing something else entirely. ;-)

I'm seeing that Sam simply marched into hell - since he's after all physical and tangible and real - and he's able to free Dean simply because Dean did not die with mortal sin on his soul. Dean died after a lifetime of giving up everything for others, which if that's not martyrdom, it's at least in the same zip code. ;-)

Either way - guh! Wrenching and beautiful. *wibbles*

Like the plotbunny for this, I think I was thinking along the same lines as dreamlittleyo: Sam committing suicide to get to Dean.

But your idea's much more pleasant. Sam working whatever it was that saved him from Lilith's Lightshow™ and walking into Hell to get Dean out... Yesh. Much more pleasant.

Hm, well, yes, I could see it that Sam killed himself - one of the most mortal of sins - to get to Dean. I guess it was just the fact that he simply walked up, and Dean's suffering ended when he appeared, that made it seem Sam made some other choice.

Or ... he's just contrary and stubborn enough to even make Hell bend his way, lol! Either way, it's awesome that your fic can be interpreted either way, and still have the power to wrench hearts all to bits. *hugs you*

Maybe dying with sin on his soul was the only way to get into Hell, but once there, nothing was stopping him from using whatever protected him from Lilith's Lightshow™. And I wonder if they could get out...

Sam would certainly be stubborn enough to get even Hell to bend over sideways to do his bidding. :D

I'm just happy people have liked it, no matter the interpretation.

Oh nothing gets me more than Sam coming in, strong, able and willing, to get his brother. And nothing gets me more than Sam reassuring Dean.

"The only way to Hell," Sam whispers the answer, feather-firm against him, "is to die with sin on your soul."

I love this so much.

There's something way too fascinating about suicide, the reasons for it, the effect it has on people, both survivors and those 'close' to them.

I've never been able to fathom suicide. Its an alien concept for me and I can't imagine the effects it has on others.

Just like succubi, rusalki and a slew of other things, suicides have fascinated me for a while; far as I know, there are no suicides in my family tree, nor am I a candidate for testing if there's life after death, but something about it all just... intrigues me. I'd love to explore the concept in fic-form one of these days.

You know Sam's not going to let Dean rot in Hell for long. Kripke and co. cannot keep the boys from sharing the screen. They just can't.
However, I hope they come up with something else than Sam committing suicide.

But half of what I've written I barely even remember writing! I'll be blaming that on the fact that those were penned down during the last minutes before falling asleep. ;)
