The creepiest thing about this episode is that no matter how many times I see it, I always freak out. Oh, and this is rather rambly and incoherent, too.
Not a picspam.
1x21: Salvation
Pastor Jim's church is located in Blue Earth, Minnesota.
The glass painting depicts Jesus with some of his disciples.
The altar is flanked by 4 candlesticks, each with 5 white, unlit candles.
On the altar (clad in white) there's a chalice, a crucifix and a large, old Bible that Jim's reading.
Meg wears in this episode a red jacket, blue jeans and (pale) yellow shirt over a white shirt.
Meg tells Pastor Jim that "just the other day" she had a little heart-to-heart with a man she killed afterwards.
The blade Pastor Jim throws has symbols along one edge and 'God's Eye' written on the other. One of those symbols looks like beth of
Phoenician, but I believe they're just something the props-people thought would look 'nice', and lack real meaning.
There's an 8-pointed star with symbols on one side of the door to Jim's lodge: I'm tempted to say it's the
Seventh Pentacle of Mars without the rings. On the other side is a drawing that looks, imo, close to the
Fourth Pentacle of Saturn.
Under the octagram is a paper with the sigils of
Astaroth,
Andromalius and
Amon.
The wall on front of which Jim dies, there seem to be
the First Pentacle of Jupiter,
the Second Pentacle of Jupiter and two other symbols that look familiar, but I can't place them.
There's
Andromalius' sign again, too.
hugemind: Do you think you'll gather all the reflections from eyes under its own title? Because the way there's this blue horizontal line on the dead deer's eye is creepy.
John's wall-notes
1. "USA WEATHER REPORT
Tropical Cyclone Carina appears as a tightly wound spiral un the Indian Ocean in this satellite view of the storm, obtained by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite on February 27, 2006. Carina had become an organized storm system four days earlier, and built rapidly into a powerful cyclone. By the time MODIS obtained this observation of Carina, peak winds were blowing at 175 kilometers per hour (110 miles per hour). However, the tropical cyclone was moving into the southern Indian Ocean well away from the nearest land, even the very remote Cocos Islands several hundred kilometers east." (Can be found, word for word,
here.)
The picture of the Tropical Cyclone Carina has been treated with a red marker, but I can't make anything sensible out of the notes.
2. The map of the USA: Arizona, Kansas and Iowa are circled with yellow. Delaware also seems to have met the marker, but it's too blurry to be sure.
This map also seems to have years written by hand over said states: Arizona has 19(23?) and 1981, Kansas has 19(42?) and 1983, Iowa has 1964 and 2006. There are similar notes next to Delaware that seem to say 194(?), 200(5?) and 200(6?).
3. From left to right:
A photo of a person covered in bees
A photo depicting a fragment from some really old manuscript. The language looks familiar, but not enough for me to recognize.
The backside of a postcard for the Eagle's Reach Motel, handwritten to say

There's also a handdrawn
Eye of Providence.
4. A reproduction of the picture depicting a shtriga preying on a woman and her baby, seen in Something Wicked (1x18).
5. Weather report with handdrawn Xs over Tennessee, North Carolina/Virginia-border and West Virginia/Pennsylvania-border, circled with an arrow pointing to Kansas.
6. A stationery note from Sleep Easy Motel with 555-0918: Gerry boxed on one edge, a looming silhouette with a halo and a ball in one roughly drawn hand, a sketch of a handgun with the words "The one. Only one." under it and "SAM" boxed and circled.
There's what looks like a page from a journal under that piece of paper.
7. A stationery note from Eagle's Reach Motel with a black silhouette framed in red.
Written on its left side visible is:
"inking about that

On its right side it:

Also, barely visible "

8. Repetition of the Tropical Cyclone Carina, a black and white photo of it now with a large, black X and a circle and the comment "Sever weather disturbances typical of manifestati-"
9. Apparently the motel's 'rules', black marker text over them as well as a note with "Sulpher trace" written in red.
10. A torn-edged piece with (attempted) Latin, probably. And corrections with a red marker.
11. Weather report featuring Europe, with yellow over the lower middle of it. Circled with red with an arrow pointing out to the west.
12. A map featuring California with a circled red X over Palo Alto, another X in Arizona, over Presscott/Wickenburg. There's a torn piece of paper with #2 on it, as well as a photocopied note.
In the same 'screen', there are also notes: "last sighting relates to" and "manifestation in one week 19(69? 19?)".
On top of the map, visible when the episode's name comes, is a blue note with "Real? Or trap?" and another with "Current location (???)?"
Books shown (left to right):

Jackie Collins - Hollywood Husbands?)

ASTM - Symposium On Dynamic Behavior of Materials 1963 John says that the Winchesters have never had anything to help finding the YED.
Until about a year ago, when he went underground, it was because he "picked up a trail", he'd figured out a pattern.
According to John, the YED-born house fires started in Arizona, New Jersey, California... but he's never before been able to get there in time "to save-".
The signs that precede the YED's appearance, according to John: cattle deaths, temperature fluctuations, electrical storms.
The signs cropped up a week before Mary's death.
They were also present in Palo Alto. (Presumably, everywhere the YED's gotten to.)
The Winchesters pass a sign saying "Leaving Salvation, The Heartland of America" and under it, "Are you ready for Judgment Day?" JW 2:27. Even though that looks like it's from the Bible, it isn't.
The "Loto jackpot" is 1,7 Million.
The county has 2 hospitals and a health center.
Caleb called John, told him about Jim's demise.
Pastor Jim's last name was Murphy.
There were traces of sulfur in Jim's church.
The ambulance that passes in front of the camera has HFD 62 on the side.
John visits Salvation Women & Children's Hospital.
Among the multitude of cards in the hidden compartment John also has a Platinum Card, a Vista Gold, and one for Oklahoma City Morgue.
As unbelievable as it may seem, perhaps, John picks up a medical personnel ID that looks like it says "John Winchester".
The plaque on an erected fixture where Sam's checking up on babies has numbers 456 - 970. A similar closer to Sam has 232 - 455.
Sam's gotten his hands on the records of the Salvation Iowa Medical Center by pretending to be an 'Officer'.
The folder above the one Sam's reading has "20431" down its side.
Sam's handwriting seems to be rather small. He has two columns on one page of his notebook: 'Babies' and 'Parents'. The opposing page is empty except for "Hay Sue Crease" (and something we don't quite get to see.)
The document the camera zooms on is Document No. 2263541, No. 998475094.
State of Iowa, Certificate of Birth
This document is to certify that
Mary Ann Liu was born on the 2nd of the month of May in the year nineteen hundred and ninety eight, sex female, complexion fair, colour of eyes blue, colour of hair black, inches 17, pounds 8, visible distinctive marks none.
United States of America
District of Colorado
The certificate was written on 3rd of May 1998, by Robert Leader, Esq. of Colorado Vital Statistics.
Dean pretends to be a Police Officer. On duty, nonetheless.
The clock of Rosie's nursery in Sam's first vision says it's 8:04 (20:04).
Later, in the last vision, the clock seems to stop at roughly 8:44.
The Holts, Rosie's family, live in number 1720.
According to Monica, they bought the house, moved in, just before Rosie was born (= a bit over half a year ago).
Charlie Holt's Toyota has (Iowa?) plates with 7J47 SV
Sam claims Meg's fall back in Shadow (1x16) was a "7-story drop".
Meg killed Jim "yesterday".
Caleb lived in Lincoln.
This is the first time the term war has been used.
Meg tells John to meet her in "warehouse in Lincoln, on the corner of Wabash and Lake".
John argues that it'll take him "about a day's drive" to get to Lincoln from Iowa.
Meg tells him to meet her there "at midnight tonight."
Dean suggests they get something similar to the Colt in a pawn shop; John thinks an antique store would be better.
In any case, Dean returns with a revolver wrapped in a plain brown paper bag.
According to John, no one besides the Winchesters and "a couple of vampires" really knows what the Colt looks like.
Mandaic is an Eastern Aramaic dialect, used by practitioners of
Mandaeism. But the piece of jewelry John is shown taking together with the small metal bottle? Is nothing but a rosary, complete with a crucifix.
John's prayer:
Exorcizo te
Creatura aquæ
In nomine Dei
Patris Omnipotentis
Et in virtute
Spiritus Sancti
Translation:
I adjure thee,
creature of water
In the name of
God the Father Almighty
and in the power of
the Holy Spirit
It appears to be a greatly shortened version of
the Blessing of Water.
dairwendan also transcribed this in
her LiveJournal.
The tires of John's truck were emptied.
Everytime Meg's around, John gets pinned against a wall, spread-eagled.
This is the first episode where differences between demons, a hierarchy among them, has been hinted at.
This is the first time we see the Yellow-Eyed Demon.
There are 3 Magic Bullets left for the Colt.
Thoughts and Shtuff
"-And the other day I met this man - a nice guy, you know? And we had a really good chat... sort of like this. Then I slit his throat and ripped his heart out through his chest.-"
Just a thought... could the man Meg refers to here be someone John knows? Or was he just some poor idiot Meg killed for laughs/to call daddy dearest?
This is also the only mention of Meg tearing out the heart of a victim. Before, in Shadow (1x16), the daevas she'd summoned did that. The 'calling card' she's left behind has been a slit throat. Also note that that's the only thing she does to Pastor Jim.
Seeing a grown-up man flee in terror from a relatively petite girl is surprisingly funny. But they managed to pull it off here without seeming campy. *adores*
"You can't be here. This is hallowed ground."
Before, we've learned that hallowed ground is bad news for 'evil spirits' (Cyrus Dorian in Route 666, 1x13). Here, based on what Pastor Jim says, 'twould appear that church is supposed to be a sanctuary from lesser demons, too. Also? Meg's a bad-ass bitch. I can't help but hope we'll see her in the future, whatever body she might wear. And that the one cast as 'her' will be able to pull it off as delightfully as Nicki Aycox. (And dear Mr Padalecki.) *adores*
I like it that most of the hunters we've seen (besides the boys) have been middle-aged/older. John, Daniel Elkins, Pastor Jim, Caleb, Bobby Singer... William Harvelle, if he'd lived. It makes sense, because it's likely most of them 'got into the business' when they were (young) adults. And notice how John (along with the Harvelles) seems to be a rarity among the hunters, taking his kids along for the ride.
I believe I'd find it hard to believe if an experienced hunter in their 20s, without a mentor, would show up.
However... We were introduced to the concept of supernatural hunters during the First Season. We were presented the idea of a whole network of such hunters during the Second Season. Could it be possible that, during the Third Season, we'll learn of families to whom hunting is a lifestyle like any other? Who are raised as hunters, generation after generation after generation? Who are able to fall in love, marry, have kids... unite the 'supernatural' with the 'normal'?
The symbols in Jim's place:
According to this website, the Seventh Pentacle of Mars is "worn to confuse one's enemies" and the Fourth Pentacle of Saturn is "a destructive seal".
The First Pentacle of Jupiter is "worn to bring better business" and the Second Pentacle of Jupiter is "worn to acquire glory, honor and riches."
JW 2:27: "Are you ready for Judgement Day?"
That's not from a Bible, so it's something they made up. And how fitting it is that it has John's initials, that it appears mere moments before John says "This ends now. I'm ending it. I don't care what it takes"...
"Think real hard. It'll come to you."
And that, Your Honour, is when any and all higher brain functions ceased to exist and all I could do was watch things spinning out of control. Salvation reduced my metamare to a whimpering bitch.
"It's gonna take me about a day's drive to get there."
From Iowa to Lincoln, Nebraska? According to Google Maps not even close. But maybe John was just trying to stall for time? There's no reason for him to think Meg would know where the Winchesters are, right?
The "midnight tonight" part, John's insistence that it's impossible to do that, might be true, though. We're never told what time Sam gets his vision, or when Meg calls them. And it's a sneaky way for Meg to call John's bluff, let him know the demons are old hands at this.
"Look, as long as it's close, she shouldn't be able to tell the difference. - I just need to buy a few hours, that’s all."
John's floundering here. He knows what they're up against, probably better than either of his sons, he's just been told his bluff's barely working and yet he tries to make-believe that a demon would fall for simple sleight-of-hand?
But he's the man Dean blamed him for being in Dead Man's Blood (1x20): he's hellbent on seeing this to the end, and his own life's already as good as gone. He harbours no illusions anymore of outliving the YED. He'd like things to be different. He'd like to see his sons get families of their own, be there when they have children... But that's a dream as unrealistic as Mary returning to life. Whatever happens during the next couple of days/weeks/months, John probably knows (has known for a while already?) that he's not walking out of this one alive.
Oh, and bowtrunckle? Sam's wearing a dark-red shirt and blue jeans throughout this episode... would you say his jacket's rather yellow-ish in hue? ;)
Sam: "Maybe we can tell 'em there's a gas leak. Might get them out of the house for a few hours."
Dean: "Yeah, and how many times has that actually worked for us?"
Not many. Recall Bugs (1x08)? :)
"You said it yourself once - that no matter what we do, they're gone. And they're never coming back."
Dean's referring to the scene on the bridge in Pilot (1x01), where Sam argues "Even if we do find the thing that killed her, Mom's gone. And she isn't coming back" and at the end of Scarecrow (1x11), where Sam says "But, Jess and Mom - they're both gone."
And those words ("not coming back") trigger the same reaction: in Pilot, Dean slammed Sam against the bridge's structure, in Salvation, Sam slams Dean against the wall.
Oh, the beautiful, broken boys... *smishes show*
At the very end, Meg seems to have simply drawn a muted-green top over her ruined pale-yellow shirt.
John Winchester is notorious among the demons. I wonder what the ever-mysterious 'they' say... ;)
This is the first episode where, I think, there's been a suggestion that demons may have physical bodies their own besides the 'smoke'. If you don't count YED in the babies' bedrooms (or the Acheri in All Hell Breaks Loose Part One, 2x21), or the devilsmoke, we've yet to see a demon in its true form.
I adore comments, and so far no one's gone there, but...
I'm a spoilerphobe. To the extreme. All I want to know about the Third Season is that it'll feature Sam, Dean and the Impala.
So no posting of spoilers of any kind for the Third Season in the comments, 'kay? :)
