Those Tiny Trifles: 1x18, Something Wicked

Aug 29, 2007 11:55

Kripke and co. finally decided to show us just why "Dean's teh awesomest big brother evah!!!!!1!!!"
Not a picspam.

1x18: Something Wicked
The mobile in the girl's room consists of a blue base, clear stars, yellow moon and a red/orange shooting star.
According to the road sign, Fitchburg has population of 20,501.
(The coordinates for Fitchburg, Wisconsin, are 43.006347 -89.431502.)
The place Dean went to get their coffees (and apparently information) is Glasow's Lunch (Serving Wisconsin's Best Bratwurst since 1968)
Also, the cups are identical to the ones they enjoyed in Richardson, Texas in Hell House (1x17).
It's 4:10 pm when Sam draws Dean's attention to the empty playground.
According to the lady at the playground "just 5 or 6" kids have been hospitalized.
The hospital in question is claimed to be Dane County Memorial Hospital.
Sam's alias is Jerry Kaplan.
When the boys arrive to the town, 6 kids have gotten sick, in 5 weeks.
The boys pass the room with Dialysis 12 above it.
The boys chat with Miles Tarnower outside the room marked Pediatrics 184.
Mary Tarnower, 13, became sick, and her sister, Bethany, the next night, within 24 hours.
On their way out, the boys pass (Recovery 533?), Storage 115, Proctology 148.
Flashback: John's journal is open on a page I could swear we've seen before. Those symbols on the upper edge look just so damn familiar...
Flashback: The Winchesters were staying in Kingpin Motel, room 768.
Flashback: John wears the same watch as in the Pilot (1x01) and Shadow (1x16)
Flashback: There's a Masters of the Universe comic book on the table top behind Dean and Sam
Flashback: Sam's watching ThunderCats, with Jaga talking to a childlike Lion-O, Panthro sitting on a chair with controls, Cheetara walking in. (= First episode of the ThunderCats.)
Dean says Fort Douglas, Wisconsin, happened 16-17 years ago.
The boys are staying at 2400 Court Motel, room 20(6?)
The MasterCard Dean gives Joanne has the numbers 5412 0629 8707, 3456, and the name Kris Warren, followed by the validity time: 9/05-9/06.
Flashback: There's something featuring a man (two men?) grimacing and a flashing light on in the telly while Dean gives Sam Spagetti-Os for dinner.
The lore on the sthriga is right, apparently. See?
However, I couldn't find the websites Sam visits. And, curiously enough, the addressbar of his browser lacks text of all kinds.
The blonde nurse seen nearby Dr. Heidecker? Is named Betty.
The old woman is in room 237.
There are what look like cards on the drawer next to her.
She's asked people to fix her cross "4 damn times already".
Sam went to do research in A. W. Stowe Public Library.
According to Sam, the shtriga strikes every 15-20 years, taking dozens of kids.
The places the shtriga's visited are (Fort Douglas) Ogdenville, North Haverbrook, Brockway and Black River Falls.
The newspaper Sam finds and reads (The Fitchburg Chronicle) is dated Monday, August 7, 1893.
Flashback: On the 3rd night in the Kingpin Motel, the shtriga struck.
Flashback: Dean's watching a black-and-white flick with adventurers in it.
Flashback: The plates of the car outside the Tavern read KAZ 3T8.
Fort Douglas, Wisconsin, was about 3 hours away from Pastor Jim's.
The shtriga tries to get Michael around 3 a.m.
Joanna's car has Wisconsin plates with 4S7 JKR.

Thoughts and Shtuff
  • The biggest question with this episode probably is: How true to fact are the flashback-sequences?
  • bowtrunckle: You might find it curious how prominent the combination of yellow-blue-red is in this episode. The mobile, the Fitchburg-poster, the girl/playground, the MasterCard, Sam in blue clothes on a red bedspread next to a yellow lamp, Heidecker's tie...
  • My single most favourite scene of this episode is, hands down, the moment outside the old woman's door when the boys think she's the shtriga. That's the only instance we've seen a Desert Eagle on the show (far as I can tell), and the boys' faces are just priceless...especially Sam/Jared...*adores*
  • The three-hour drive to Pastor Jim's... Based on that, and that Pastor Jim lives in Blue Earth, Minnesota (Salvation, 1x21), Fort Douglas is somewhere around Menomonie/Chippewa Falls.
It might also be that Pastor Jim's moved since then. :)
  • Any thoughts on how John says nothing to Sam in the first flashback?
  • So... anyone else thinking the shtriga was Emperor Palpatine's ancestor? Or perhaps a mad twin in an alternate universe? Ringwraiths and dementors can probably be found somewhere in that family tree, too... Not to mention the Phantom Blot.

    I hate catching a cold.
