I need to watch this again, partly because as always with Moffat it's difficult to make sense of all the dialogue the first time but also because the whole being crazy in Victorian London thing is what happens to Eight when he gets sent to earth (only he doesn't get his memory back for 100 years) so I was a bit distracted, although I was glad Twelve didn't end up in a lunatic asylum ( ... )

Yes, second viewing was SO helpful, knowing where the story beats were going so something like the Marcus Aurelius line (while still feeling awkward) was more understandable because I knew where to pay attention. :)

That's true about Eight! Poor Eight. I've forgotten 98% of his first (NO LONGER ONLY!) televisual outing.

usually we would expect Clara to be the one who needed more help.
Oo, so true!

The bunker was SO HARD TO WATCH.

Lol, well he was in a night shirt in the TV movie as well which didn't help! Basically any time someone gets amnesia is reminiscent of Eight because it happens all the time to him. (And we can't have the joke that he managed to blow up Galifrey twice any more because it was John Hurt the second time, so we have to use something.)

Oo, so true!

I was worried how the chemistry would work between an older actor and Jenna because Amy was very vulnerable and I didn't know what Clara's personality was in the previous series really. So they struck a good balance for me right off the bat.

Emily! I wrote my post very deliberately without looking for yours first, even though I *so* wanted to know what you thought - and I feel like we've written very mirror-image posts. Because I agree with everything you've written (especially about the bravery it takes to drop the facade - although I find it very difficult to think of previous Doctors as facades, exactly), and yet, my post is almost entirely from Clara's POV, and about how disorienting things must have been for her. (And, you know, a tiny amount of Eleven-flail. I am not made of stone, you know.)

I love that Amy would have rather skipped the talking and gone right to torture over admitting she was scared, but Clara can do that and keep going.

YES. That was exactly what I was thinking, too - Amy was constantly sassing alien kidnappers rather than let them see she was terrified, and I loved seeing that Clara reacted so differently. That whole section was terrifying - like you, I'm still stunned that the Doctor just left her like that, and I think that scene colored my ( ... )
